NHL 10 vs NHL 2K10 for 360
Posted on September 27, 2009 at 02:52 PM.
Hey guys. Do you guys have an opinion (having actually played both or informed reading) about which game is better this year?

I am looking to buy just one hockey game for the 360 this year since I don't play hockey as much as other sports games.
I am a casual hockey fan, don't play as much as other sports games, so I want to be able to score, otherwise I get bored, but I want the CPU to be competitive too. I don't like a checkfest, but I do like checking. I want a combo of sim and fun play. Any thoughts?

2K10 is a solid game and since you can upload peoples sliders, it makes it easier to find a good style of gameplay. However there are some serious flaws to the game. The goalie AI is terrible and increasing the Goalie AI slider only makes for more warping on the ice. Also the manual Dekes are stiff and look awful. The roster management in Franchise Mode is a pain in the a$$. Finally, if you want to play online, good luck, as there is almost nobody to play. The game isn't awful, but it's flaws definately keep it from being the #1 choice.

I would switched to NHL10 within a week and haven't looked back since. Online is most always hoppin' and the gameplay, while a bit predictable, still smooth and fun. The only thing I would suggest is playing on Default at first, if you are new to the game. Trying to play the game with some of the more "sim" settings offered here on OS will make you pull your hair out quick and maybe turn you off from the game completely.

savoie2006, thanks for the info about the two games. I wish there was a demo for 2K10 and its hard to find to rent. It makes you wonder why they didn't release a demo this year. Maybe they knew the game couldn't compete with NHL 10. I liked the NHL 10 demo, but was worried about scoring since I have read people say the goalie's are too good (I will follow your advice and play on default, that probably makes a difference).
The other criticism I read about NHL 10 is that all players play the same. Do you find that to be true?

As I once told you I would go for 2K because, regardless of its flaws, it's more of a sim. This year they have improved the graphics, the puck physics is top-notch, there's a bunch of sliders that make you tailor the game to your likings(I would recommend download Venom sliders and tweak from there), there's broadcast cam view that's like watching on TV (better than Madden), and players have weight, you feel how they gain speed, how they accelerate. NHL may be more fun, but, though a good upgrade from last year, the puck floats in the air like there's no gravity sometimes, player skitters on the ice and don't have momentum, the deke all the same. That's my overall view. So long

Thanks bonnano for the info on 2K10. I forgot I asked before, but now I'm getting serious about getting an NHL game. I think I am going to get one tomorrow

As far as the goalies, they have a Goalie Reaction Time Slider, so if you want you can make the Cpu's a bit slower to make it easier to score if you want.

As for all players playing the same, I would say yeah that seems to be true, thought with the Attributes Effect slider maxed and the Cpu Difficulty slider at the minimum, there seems to be a bit more difference. I just wouldn't say quite enough. What bothers me more is that the teams play the same way. The Offensive strategy doesn't differ from game to game. The Offensive AI is quite predictable and passes the puck for the sake of passing it seems sometimes. I wish there was a more variety in the way the Cpu attacked on offense or that teams played the game as their real life counterparts did.

The NHL series is amazing. I don't play much as other sports titles so I am still rocking NHL 09 baby. NHL 10's demo is amazing though.

Thanks for all of your opinions. Savoie, its nice to know that you can tweak the goalies. Dorismary, and stlstudios thanks for your input as well. I still haven't bought one yet, I am going to try to rent first. Heck, I haven't had much time to play any other games lately, but I am itching to play some hockey.
