How to get on Xbox Live with a dial-up internet connection (reposted)
Posted on May 5, 2009 at 12:32 PM.
There are many people who only have dial-up internet for many reasons, mostly due to coverage area, and cost. I have been PMed about how to get on Live with dial-up many times, so I decided to post some basic instructions. I have not done this on Vista, but I am sure it can be done as well.
A couple of years ago, before I had broadband, I used to connect to Live this way. So I know it works. Do this at your own risk, however (see below why).
Here's basically what you can do with a dial-up internet connection:
Download Live arcade games and demos
Download game demos (takes a while)
Update your console (be careful here, you need a good connection that doesn't flake out on you)
Get themes
And most importantly GET PATCHES.
This is all that I would ever do with a dial-up connection when I had that. I would update my console, and get patches. You cannot play games against anyone, it is too slow of course. Patches don't take forever, but it is slower than broadband of course.
How do you connect via dial-up? By setting your PC configuration so it will share it's dialup connection with your Xbox 360 or PS3 via ethernet Cat5 cable.
To do it you will need:
A PC with a working dial-up connection, running Windows XP or Vista
An Ethernet Cable (like Cat5, I recommend Crossover Cat5 cable , but any Cat5 or Cat6 (more expensive) cable will work. Get a long cable for cheap at buy.com) I like this one and this is what I have except mine is 100ft. (19.99) and 50 ft (14.99). These are crossover cables:

and of course Xbox 360 console.
OK, I haven't done this in a while, but here goes:
Connect the 360 to your PC using the ethernet cable.
Turn on the 360 and the PC.
Get the dialup connection up and running.
(you may have to turn off your firewall until all of this is setup. This is the usual culprit of people having problems doing this. Some firewalls require you to allow all of this stuff afterward as well. They are all different, so you are on your own there. Do this at your own risk as well )
Open the Control Panel in Windows
Go to Network and Internet Connections.
Open Network Setup Wizard, select next.
Ignore the checklist and select next
Select "This computer connects directly to the Internet.".
Select next, and select your dial-up connection as the way you connect to the Internet.
Select next again, then select "Local Area Connection" as your private connection.
Leave any names for your PC alone, select next.
Leave the workgroup name alone, select next.
Be sure to turn on file and printer sharing if you want to stream videos from your PC to the 360, then select next.
Review and select next to apply them.
Select the last option that pops up, like if it says "I do not need to run Network Setup Wizard on the other PCs."
Reboot your computer.
Dial-up into your internet connection.
On your 360 choose the System blade
Select Network Settings
Select open "Test Xbox LIVE Connection"
A test will run on the cable connection, addresses, etc.
You will have to download updates if it's successful. This may take a while. Make sure you have a good dial-up connection. If it disconnects you a lot, I would not update my system, as you may "brick" it.
You will of course need to set up an Xbox Live Silver account if you have not done so already in the past. Silver is free, Gold costs money.
If you have trouble, you may have to turn off your firewall before you do all this, connect to Live, then turn it back on.
Please don't get upset with me if you "brick" your system. The risk would be if you are updating your console, and your internet connection craps out. I never had mine "brick", but theoretically, it could happen. It should be safe for patches, demos, etc. Do all of this at your own risk.
Hope this helps some of you. Give me some feedback on how it is working out if you do it. I haven't been on this way in 2 years or so.
