UFC Undisputed 2009

Once again, I'm going to take a bit of a break from my MLB 09 blog for something different. Now, to preface this blog, I have to admit I'm really not THAT big of a fan of UFC and the MMA world. I've recently gotten into it more through my channel of friends that eat it up like hot dogs at a Cardinals game. But, to know what is going on and who the majority of the people are outside the bigger names is beyond me. However, I enjoy a good fighting game. Much the same way I'm not a WWE fan much these days, but I still like the games. There's something about being able to create a big superstar and whoop up on some folks that makes me feel good. Not good in a "I JUST BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF YOU" way. Well, maybe a bit that way haha. But its something that I can't do and have no desire to attempt in my life, so being able to escape the reality for a bit and do something like that is a nice break. That feeling can lead to a whole big rant by me about how people take gaming too seriously on all ends, but I'll spare everyone that to get back to what I originally planned to talk about. UFC Undisputed is a very solid game. Now, I do admit that I am having a hard time with the controls, which I think many are falling into that. That and I just can't defend a takedown or submission attack for beans. I chalk alot of that up to my lack of knowledge of the sport and how counters and reversals work. Obviously, its not wrestling. There's no script, these guys are going at it and the winner is the guy left standing. And maybe some of that is how I've gone about making my character. I'm a boxer-style striker with wrestling-style grappling. I do my sparring and training, but that's really only getting me so far at the moment. My first few fights were knockout victories, but I was fighting the lower rung. Once I cracked into the top 10, I got my butt whooped up on! I turned into the UFC whipping boy! Granted my fighter's ratings are still very, very low. However, the overall gameplay of this game is great once you get past the extensive control options. At your disposal, you have the ability to reverse and get into several different positions to set up for a good ol ground-n-pound or maneuver around for a submission if that is your style. I have yet to win a fight by submission, but that is my goal. I'm sure that after this first fighter has run its course, I'll go the submission route with, maybe make a BJJ style fighter or something along those lines. The career mode could definitely use a bit of a variance in the next iteration of the sport. The menu's can get a bit clunky, and with it coming from THQ/Yukes, I would think that they could borrow more from the fighter creation end. Smackdown vs RAW has some amazing fighter customizing during the creation of your superstar, which I think can be easily translated over to another UFC title. That's just one small thing on my wishlist. Also, the training/sparring tends to get old quick. Spicing it up a bit like Fight Night would be nice, actually hit the bags or do something to go on a sprint with your fighter, rather than clicking it and BOOM you're stronger/faster suddenly. However, comparing it with previous UFC titles, this one is head and shoulders above. I'm sure with it being the first next-gen title there is ALOT in store, depending on the reception of it. I tend to think it went over well. UFC/MMA is becoming more and more popular each day. Here in Southeast Missouri there are several teams with fighters training and fighting at the local/regional level. It's reminiscent of the wrestling boom of the late 90's, with the WCW vs WWF ratings wars. There were independent leagues sprouting up EVERYWHERE! So with that, I can see another title coming out and hopefully a bit more updated and ready to roll. As far as graphics, this game, once you get into the octagon, its where it gets the high marks at. Noticeable fighters and moves, fighters looking fluid. The crowd is rather tepid in comparison to the cheers and howls that you hear. But overall, I'd give this game an 8/10. Solid game, could use some tweaks here and there, but its not unplayable at all and is a GREAT game with your friends. Now if I can only learn how to defend better, I think I'll be in good shape. I'm sure that after a few more nights I'll be back into my rotation with the Show. Gotta give a new game its fair shake-down first though. That's it for now, and until next time...GO CRAZY FOLKS, GO CRAZY!
