Washington Wizards 2013-2014 Playoffs: First Round Update
Posted on June 8, 2011 at 03:27 AM.
Washington Wizards

29 Game Regular Season
10 Minute Quarters
Playoff Format is 5-7-7-7

Preview:

Danny Granger is under a lot of pressure heading into the Playoffs. First, he was just acquired at the trade deadline and has had limited time to build relationships and on-court chemistry with his new teammates. His acquisition led to the Wizards being grouped with the leagues contenders. Couple that with the fact that he will be facing his old team, the Indiana Pacers, in the first round. Granger also suffered 2 minor injures after joining the Wizards so he will certainly be in the spotlight. It will be key for Danny to stay relaxed and focus on his game, not the surrounding stories.

The series will also mark the first time Marvin Williams faces the Wizards since he was moved along with picks in the trade for Danny Granger.

Washington is coming in at 100% but the same can't be said for Indiana. Paul George, who was made the go-to man and the future following Granger's trade, tore his hamstring less than 2 weeks after the move. He will be out for the rest of the season. Darren Collison is also banged up, suffering from back spasms. While that won't keep him from playing, it will certainly effect him.

Recap:

The injury bug bit Indiana again in game 1. Ben Gordon, who had been playing well in the game, came down awkwardly after a layup attempt and had to be helped off the floor. He was later diagnosed with back spasms, an injury that would keep him out until game 3. The Pacers were still in the game when Gordon was injured, but fell apart with his absence. Aaron Brooks tried to carry the load off the bench but 3-18 shooting won't get it done.

Danny Granger will win Wizards Player of the Game in his first game back in Indiana. Danny scored 22 points in 3 quarters of work as the Wizards chose to rest him in the 4th with the game already in hand.

Recap:

Any time you set records for accomplishments in a single game your team has a pretty good chance of winning. That was the case tonight as Danny Granger broke multiple team records and tied an NBA record. His 9 three point field goals made ties the record for most in a single playoff game.

Granger's 47 points, 19 field goals made, and 9 three point field goals made are all Wizards team records for the playoffs. For accomplishing all of these feats and leading his team to a dominating win and grabbing a commanding 2-0 series lead, Granger will win Wizards Player of the Game for the 2nd game in a row.

Recap:

Sweep! The Indiana Pacers had their season end today in dominating fashion. While no one player will get the blame from any member on the team, that's not the same from the media. Aaron Brooks is being slammed for his awful performance in all media outlets today. Only making 4 out of your 33 field goal attempts is not going to get it done as the 6th man. Brooks just wouldn't stop jacking up shots, shooting 2-20 from 3 point range. When it's not falling you can't just keep shooting, you have to adjust. Brooks did not and will have an offseason to think about his mistakes.

John Wall was outstanding for Washington. A triple double in a series clinching game is rare. Wall is gaining the reputation of being a "gamer". A guy who plays his very best the bigger the stage. No Wizards fan would argue that claim. Wall will end Danny Granger's streak of 2 POTG awards, taking home the honors in game 3.

  • Danny Granger and Marcus Jordan celebrate the series win.

Looking Forward:

Washington had better not be cocky following the domination of the Pacers. Miami is coming off of a tough series against Chicago ready and willing to end the Wizards season and hopes of a title. Miami's players need no introduction.

LeBron was crowned MVP at the end of the regular season, with his teammate Dwyane Wade finishing 2nd. John Wall felt he was disrespected and absolutely snubbed by the voters. He finished the season averaging more points and assists than both Wade and James, yet Wall didn't even finish in the top 5 of the MVP voting. Although disappointed, Wall has said he will wait until the offseason to vent his frustrations.

The added boost of being snubbed only adds fuel to the fire for Wall. He will be gunning to prove he was deserving of the MVP, and deserving of far more attention than he currently gets. He will need to control his emotions and stick to his game, however.

The matchup to watch will be Danny Granger vs LeBron James. If Granger can win this matchup the Wizards have a great chance to win the series and upset the Heat for the second straight year. Last year the Heat were banged up, this year both teams are 100%. It will be a powerhouse matchup starting May 3rd.
