Trades Involving Washington
John Wall getting hurt when he did was a blessing in disguise for Washington. It showed the Wizards that without him, they are a Lottery bound team. Josh Smith simply cannot carry this team by himself in the event of Wall getting hurt again.
That being said, the Wizards Front Office decided it would be best to scrap the plans of finding a complimentary piece, preferably a perimeter defender and instead try to find a player capable of being the 3rd Wheel and give Washington the now popular "Big Three".
Washington called around the league looking for their man. Memphis was the first team to get deep into discussions with Washington trying to either grab O.J. Mayo or Rudy Gay. Unfortunately, Memphis required John Wall to even continue discussions. The Wizards, not willing to part with Wall, moved on.
The next conversation was with Indiana. The Pacers were willing to part with Danny Granger without taking John Wall back in return. Paul George becoming an UFA after the year put Indiana in an awkward situation. They wanted to keep George, but with Granger also up for a Contract they didn't feel they could keep both. So they decided to move Granger to get something for him as opposed to letting him walk for nothing.
Yi Jianlian and picks was the offer from Washington. Yet another problem presented itself, however, when the Pacers said they wanted a Shooting Guard back, but they didn't feel any of Washington's current SG's were of high enough quality to complete the deal. They didn't want Yi because they had just signed Jeff Green (PF) to a 5 year deal. So the Wizards sought out to find a third team to complete the deal.
Utah presented itself as the third team. Ben Gordon and his expiring $13 million dollar contract was the prize the Pacers sought. Having no loyalty to Gordon, Indiana felt he could push them towards the playoffs this year. And at the end of the year they would simply let him walk and use the money to resign Paul George. The deal was done.

Recap:
Yi Jianlian's departure was a painful pill to swallow for the Wizards. The most productive member of the bench for the past few years, with the potential to become a starter in the very near future, Yi will be missed. 2 First Round picks are also hard to send away but the Wizards feel they have most of the guys they need to win a title and Danny Granger is one of the final pieces.
The Pacers get the cap flexibility they need to resign Paul George as well as picks to help them get back into contention. They missed the playoffs last year and are currently slated to miss them again this year.
The Jazz get cap relief by losing Ben Gordon. They needed to clear some space to be able to resign Derrick Favors who is a RFA this summer. Yi, if they resign him, will be a great help for Utah moving forward. They are expected to play him at SF.
2nd Trade
As the clock was just about to tick past the point where no more trades were allowed this season, the Wizards received a call. Detroit was on the other end of the line with an interesting offer for Washington.
The offer was Jan Vesely and their 1st round pick for Shawn Kemp Jr. The Wizards really didn't want to lose Kemp but they certainly had to weigh their options given the offer.
Jan Vesely, although only 24, has already reached his max potential. Shawn Kemp Jr. meanwhile, has been progressing his entire rookie year thus far and every scout in the business expects him to turn into a Superstar down the road. Certainly this trade isn't balanced as is. But the thought of getting the Pistons 1st rounder made it interesting.
Detroit is currently sitting with the 4th worst record in the NBA and they have little to no talent to carry them out of the cellar. With Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Monta Ellis and Brandon Roy amongst the players becoming free agents this summer the Pistons look to get as much cap room as possible. This trade would clear $2 million for them.
So, is it worth giving up a young player with Superstar potential for a career role player and a lottery pick, which can be hit or miss? The Wizards eventually thought that the deal was a good deal for them. Time will tell if that is actually the case.
