Washington Wizards Midseason Update 1
29 Game Season
10 Minute Quarters
Record Thus Far: 4-1
Game 1
Orlando Magic
at
Washington Wizards
Recap:
The Wizards started off the 13-14 season with a bang defeating the aging Magic. Josh Smith played well in his Wizards debut. They expect more out of him but his performance was decent. Rookies Marcus Jordan and Shawn Kemp both saw their first NBA action. Marcus Jordan showed a lot of promise at the offensive end while Kemp dominated the boards in his time.
However the most impressive new Wizard was Austin Daye. In limited minutes off the bench Daye managed to lead the team in rebounding and net 5 points. Kentavious Caldwell also impressed, leading the team in scoring in his first ever start.
Game 2:
Los Angeles Lakers
at
Washington Wizards
Recap:
The Lakers came out firing in this one and jumped out to an early 10 point lead. The Wizards clawed back into it in the 2nd quarter and took a lead into halftime. The Lakers got back into it late but clutch free throw shooting by John Wall sealed the game. Unfortunately for Washington, Josh Smith was hurt late in the 4th quarter and would miss the next 2 games.
The MVP of this game was Marcus Jordan. His stats weren't all that impressive but his lock down defense on All-Time Great Kobe Bryant was incredible. The young Jordan in only his 2nd career game looked like a 10 year veteran guarding the larger and far more experience Kobe and his ability to contest shots and prevent Kobe from getting to the rim is what won the game for Washington.
Game 3:
Oklahoma City Thunder
at
Washington Wizards
Recap:
The Wizards are still trying to figure out how they managed to pull out a win and get to 3-0. After allowing 63 points in the first half, 31 to Kevin Durant, the Wizards defense stepped up in the 3rd and 4th quarters holding OKC to only 31 second half points.
John Wall and Yi Jianlian - who is stepping in for the injured Josh Smith - led the Wizards in a great comeback win. John Wall's near triple double in this game along with his performance in the Lakers game a few days earlier gained him Player of the Week honors.
Game 4:
Milwaukee Bucks
at
Washington Wizards
Recap:
The terrible defense from the Oklahoma City game was carried over into this game by the Wizards. However, the Bucks managed to keep their scoring up enough in the second half to outlast the Wizards and hand them their first loss of the season. Washington will have to learn quick if it intends to compete in the playoffs this year. Allowing 69 points in one half is unacceptable at any level.
Marcus Jordan had his worst game as a pro. Coach Saunders said after the game "He was just trying to do too much out there". He looked every bit the part of the raw rookie tonight and for his and the Wizards sake fans should hope he turns it around in time for the next game, a tough test against the Pacers.
Chris Wright (PG) was signed to fill the roster spot left in the absence of Josh Smith. He was sent down to the D-League after the game as Josh Smith would be ready to go against Indiana.
Game 5:
Washington Wizards
at
Indiana Pacers
Recap:
Despite the abysmal free throw shooting performance the Wizards dominated the Pacers to earn their 4th win of the season. Josh Smith announced his return from injury with a bang giving Washington fans what they had hoped for out of him ever since he was signed this past offseason.
Austin Daye continued his stellar all-around play off of the bench. He may not be lighting up scoreboards but he's certainly doing everything the Wizards ask of him and is making Coach Flip Saunders consider placing him in the Starting Lineup to see what he can do. If that does happen, all signs point to Marvin Williams being the odd man out as his defensive play has been questionable at best so far this season.
Marcus Jordan rebounded nicely from his disastrous performance against Milwaukee. Despite being a 2nd round pick he has outshined 1st rounder and fellow rookie Shawn Kemp Jr. and the contest isn't even close. Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell has been spending extra time with Jordan and that certainly is showing.

When you keep Kobe from scoring and force Bynum to carry the team, you can beat the Lakers. Good job their. And tough break against the Bucks. Jennings in an under-rated PG in the league, and it shows right there.
