Dazraz's Blog
In this blog I would like to raise a discussion regarding the future of sports videogames in 10 years time.
With the recent news of redundancies at 2K & poor early sales indication of Madden 11 are we nearing a point where game developers are no longer being limited by the console technology but by the sheer costs of producing a sports title.
We expect, quite rightly, a fully licensed, in depth, broadcast quality sports game that plays like the real thing.
The PS3 & XBOX 360 undoubtedly have the power for such titles to be created yet with the exception of maybe MLB the Show & the NBA 2K series these expectations are rarely met.
In years past game developers were always limited with what they could create but that is not so much the case now & certainly a Sony PS4 would have endless possibilities.
The problem is even given an infinite amount of computing power how much money can a developer afford to invest to make the games we truly desire without charging ridiculous amounts.
One method is sharing technologies across titles such as EA's Locomotion & Codemasters Evolution racing engine.
Also console manufacturers need to make it as easy as possible for game developers to create games on their hardware. The PS3 is often criticised from this aspect.
Exclusive licenses should no longer be an option. 2K spent a bundle on buying the exclusive third party MLB license & up until the most recent version have been releasing a string of poor titles. Stop spending money on exclusivity & invest in game quality instead.
What do you think the future holds?

Great read! It will be an extremely interesting future to say the least. I read somewhere that sports games account for an extremely small percentage of overall game sales. Knowing this and knowing big business, I foresee sports games transitioning to a more casual/arcade like experience vs simulation football. I call it the wii sports effect. That game will go down in history as the game that changed sports video gaming.

Thanks. I certainly think developers to need to cater for a broad range of consumers. Not everybody as the time often required to work through lengthy career modes or to unlock features within the game. Everybody pays the same for each game & therefore should be able to play it their way.

I think it should be like this...
Each developer makes one master game. Poll all the fans and take everything that was awesome from ever game in their series and take as long as it takes to put it all in there, and release that bad boy. NBA2k Basketball, NBA Elite Basketball, EA's NHL Hockey, Madden Football, etc. No more years, this IS the game. Then as far as rosters, new teams, schedules, and all that stuff...DLC. That way the companies can make their money. Fans can chime in with what should be in the game, and they can come out with patches to make it perfect. It would make the most sense to do this when the next-next-gen systems come out.
And end all game for each sport, that you will have for the life of the system, with updates along the way to improve gameplay, rosters, adding cameras, and so forth.
I certainly think that games need to have continuation from year to year. You make a good point whereby games should be built up & modified over time as opposed to a constant stream of new releases that bring out a host of new features whilst dropping others.
