THE FUTURE OF MADDEN's EXTRA POINT SHOW

This is my first blog here at Operations Sports. I've been a regular viewer of this website for a while now but decided to get more involved.

I thought I would start up a discussion on what was one of the real let down features of Madden 10, The Extra Point Show.

Although many people dispute the importance of having a TV style news show within a franchise mode I personally feel that if done properly it can add a unique dynamic to a game. You only have to look at the high esteem NFL 2K5 is held in. The broadcast style package was loved by many & is always referred to when reflecting on the top NFL games of the past.

So what of the Extra Point show? EA made some big noises on the lead up to the release of Madden 10 on this feature & although visually it looked impressive the voice overs of Fran Charles & Alex Flanagan were disjointed, uninformative & basically woefully executed. That being said the fact that EA included such a feature at least indicated an intention to move the franchise in a more broadcast style direction.

So surely with Madden 11 the Extra Point would be revamped, in depth & a much more enjoyable distraction from the week to week franchise operation. Not so!

To be fair EA made no mention of the Extra Point in the lead up to Madden 11 & openly admitted Franchise Mode was pretty much untouched. In fact the assumption was the mode may have been dropped. It's still there (although the abysmal half time show has been dropped) yet it's as bad as ever.

With EA promising "Next Year" will see a complete rebuild of the franchise mode will that then include a studio style news show that will really deliver.

What I would like to see is a studio team that can give in depth reports on games played/coming up & be driven to understand the relevance to each fixture within the season. I know alot of people ask for a highlight show to be featured. I have my doubts this will appear on the current hardware due to the load times that would be required to show each replay segment. After all gamers will be expecting each replay to be shown at the correct stadium & with the same level of detail that they see in the normal game. It would be awesome to see all the same.
