FIFA 12 - PATCH IDEAS
Posted on October 4, 2011 at 04:47 AM.
Now I'm not a big fan of wishlists for 'next years game' just a week on the back of the release of 'this years game'. I would however like to get a blog going on some ideas for FIFA 12 that could be corrected via a patch.

For the record FIFA 12 is yet another impressive release in what as become a consistently improving game in the last few years. Equally consistent are some of the games more annoying quirks.

Below are a list of a few things that annoy me & that I believe, with my very limited knowledge of the technology involved, could be resolved via a patch. Please offer your own thoughts but try to keep to ideas that could be revised via a patch as opposed to brand new features.

In no particular order:-

1.) LACK OF FOULS - I play many games without a single booking. The CPU hardly commits anything. In about 25 games (6 minute halves) I could list the number of free kicks I've had awarded to me on both hands!

2.) CPU TEAM MANAGEMENT - I don't know if this issue exists in Career Mode, as I play the multi-player single season modes. In this mode the CPU does not manage their team properly. If a player goes out through injury/suspension the CPU does not put them back in the starting line-up when they are available again, even if they are their star player.

3.) REPLAYS - Considering some of the impressive broadcast replay sequences we see in many games, FIFA continues to be poor here. A goal should justify more than one automatic replay. Also the logic engine that determines which replays should show at Half Time & Full Time is off, often showing shots to nothing whilst failing to replay an exciting goal mouth incident.

4.) PENALTY KICKS - Okay this maybe just me, but I am awful at penalty kicks. I end up just kicking it down the middle as whenever I try to place it in the corner I normally put it a mile wide. An option to have an on screen cursor to locate the shot would be nice.

5.) CPU STRATEGY - I'm actually finding this slightly worse than last year. The CPU does not notably change it's play style irrespective of the game situation. When behind in a game on FIFA 11 the CPU would push forward much more aggressively but this year I notice little or no difference in it's strategy.

There are other ideas that I would like to see for the game but the above are things that I believe can be rectified via a patch.

Regarding #2, not sure how much you've seen this and what the situation was. Is there a chance other players were on good form and the absent player saw his drop? That might be a bit of a reach, but it certainly happens IRL.

Good ideas.

- I agree about fouls. Fouls need to be accurately represented in a simulation football game in order achieve the right balance in free kicks and cards. I think this might be the most "patchable" issue, as the Fifa team scaled fouls back from the demo from what I understand. It would be nice for them to make the player physics a bit more "sensitive" like they were in the demo, and have fouls called for collisions on the ground and in the air, on and off the ball, etc. I'd love to see a slider for fouls so that we could achieve 15-20 fouls per side on 15 minute games, 10-12 fouls on 10 minutes, etc.

- I'd like to see AI controlled teams play differently based on the calibre of team they're playing. If I'm a League One team playing an AI-controlled bottom-table Prem team, I want them to come forward and attack me. Meanwhile, If I'm playing as one of the top teams in the world against that same AI-controlled bottom-table Prem team, I want them to play for the draw, with 9,10 men behind the ball, lots of defensive clearances, etc.

For me, if we could get a fouls slider, this game would be just about perfect.

As for penalties, the CPU seems to shoot down the middle a lot, even on Legendary. Players almost always go for the bottom corners.

I'm hoping that they patch the online matchup system. Far too often i end up playing against the same team i picked. It should never happen. I really don't like that.

A slider for fouls would certainly be a great idea. I haven't felt the need to play around with many of FIFA's sliders, other than reducing CPU pass accuracy to a more human level, as the AI is pretty solid. A foul slider would be one I would find a use for.

Honestly as far as patchable stuff for this years game, the bookings are just about the only thing this game needs. Even getting fouls called isn't too difficult unless youre just dribbling the ball straight into the d. I thought the demo was just about perfect as far as fouls go, they definitely made a mistake by tonning them down.

I don't know if they'ed actually tweak the ai to slide tackle a bit more via a patch but that would be welcomed. I guess the real culprit is the referee ai in that the strick refs really aren't all that strick.
