With the surprise news that EA have delayed their NBA Elite title due to the overwhelming negative feedback it has received, I ask you this simple question.
Would EA have released NBA Elite, as it is, if there was no NBA 2K11 this year?
Have we now got the most damning piece of evidence that suggests that developers should no longer be able to sign long term exclusive license deals. Madden is good this year, but there is certainly enough reasons to imply that EA are not exactly pushing themselves too hard on a franchise they know they have no competition for.
Developers, just like us as individuals, have 3 choices when faced with competition. You either push yourself harder than ever to be the best, you give up, or you eliminate the competition. EA's choice has generally been to do the latter. With the NBA franchise they have not been able to do that & the results have spoken for themselves.
If you can't eliminate the opposition then you simply improve or give up.
