PS3 V 360. DEMO REFLECTIONS.
Posted on September 16, 2010 at 04:58 AM.
Okay time to have another console debate. I have both the PS3 & 360 & in general I don't find a massive difference between the two. I think when pushed the PS3 is more capable but as most games are cross platform that isn't very often.

When it comes to buying a game I often rely on the demo experience & feedback from OS'ers to help decide which platform I will buy a game for. Unless, like MLB the Show, a game is released specifically for the US market whereby I have to buy for the PS3. I'm from the UK & the multi region functionality of the PS3 is a blessing.

Anyways back to the point of this blog. This week we have been treated to 2 big demo releases. NBA 2K11 & FIFA 11. I downloaded the demos on both systems & there are noticeable differences between the 2 games on either console.

The biggest distinction is on NBA 2K11. This is visually superior to a very noticeable degree on the 360. The PS3 has lots more jaggies. No real surprise as this is a weak spot of the system especially with 2K produced games. More disappointing though is the colours on the PS3 version. They seem dull & washed out. Colours on the 360 are much more vibrant. Also the courts on the 360 have a much better polished look to them. During gameplay the player movement is smoother also. If you own both consoles, based on the demo, I would definitely recommend the 360 version.

The differences on FIFA 11 are less apparent but they do exist. However this time it's the PS3 that wins the battle. When the camera pans the stadium at the beginning of the game the PS3 visuals seem slightly smoother. Once the game starts the player models look better on the PS3. Animations seem quite a bit more fluid. As I say these differences are minor compared to NBA 2K11 & nothing for 360 owners to be bothered about.

A little fuel to the fire of the great debate on console superiority.

I think it usually depends on the lead system which one is better. Alot of companies still use the xbox since its been out longer and the technology is easier to work with.

It would be great if developers could create games independently of one another so as to take advantage of each systems strengths & weaknesses. It won't happen for obvious cost reasons. However when you look at games created solely for one of the systems, such as MLB the Show (PS3) or Forza 3 (360), you can see just what the consoles are capable of producing without the compromises of cross platform development.

@Dazraz....Good point in regards to The Show and Forza 3. You have to remember that those titles are first party. Historically, titles developed in-house by Sony and Microsoft have a tendency to better utilize the technology because the developers know it well.

That is why I am shocked that MS never got back into the sports genre or that Sony only publishes a baseball game. Although MS sports titles were horrible (outside of Link 2004), the visuals were actually better.

In my opinion, it is better that third party publishers ensure that its games are comparable for each system as it could / would hamper sales and potentially alienate those folks who own a specific system.

Dazraz, I've been saying that about devs taking advantage of the PS3's strengths for the longest. Like albert said, unfortunately, 360s are the lead system of choice because of ease of development and quicker turn around and porting. The PS3 when put to the test is said to outshine the 360 but most companies are cross-platforming. The difference is definitely noticeable in first party games, especially on the PS3. U think Forza is something, eh? Dollar to donuts that GT5 outshines it...but then again, Polyphony has only had about 12 years to develop the darn thing. LOL!

I totally disagree regarding fifa. It actually looks much better on the 360 version. If you let kaka stand there for a second, notice the building on the right side. On the ps3 version it is much more blurry and the windows arent as defined. Now I know buildings don't nessacarily matter in a soccer game, but the same can be said for other aspects of the game graphically, the goalie for instance doesnt look as sharp as the 360 version. I also noticed some weird haze on the ps3 version during kick off games as well as saturated colours. I guess it depends on the tv but I still feel 360 will always own multiplatform gaming :s.....

That's interesting. It could well be a TV thing. As I said the differences were minimal unlike NBA 2K11 where they were quite significant.
