Philosophies, Cuts, and Prospective Free Agents

Alright from the top this looks to be a pretty decent challenge as I decided to keep the original playbooks (Shanahan’s Zone Blocking offense & their own style of Man Cover) of the previous coaching staff as I have plans on improving the weaker defensive playbook. It’s also more productive to keep the original playbooks in this special case to teach new plays in the formations already taught by the previous regime. Firstly, the roster. As displayed in the accompanying chart there are quite a few holes on this team that need to be filled. Player potentials are in parenthesis next to their name of the depth chart. Aging players Tom Nalen, Jason Elam, and John Lynch could very well be traded to bolster our draft picks for this year and 2009 or to fill holes at key positions. Yes, Lynch, Nalen, and Elam are amongst the best at the respective positions, but we need to get younger at those positions. Bottom line this is a rebuilding year for the Broncos. Oh before I forget, here are my coaching philosophies and skills. Now since I’ve written my background story for my coach to have been solely an OC, I felt it necessary for him to have only the offensive skills to reflect this, with the QB position to be higher than the others since he has the most knowledge for that position. See the challenge now?

So without any qualms, I start shaking things up by making cuts left and right. QB Patrick Ramsey is the first to go, only costing us $290K in penalties but saving us $2.12M in money for the current cap. One of the biggest troubles I had was debating whether or not to cut TE Daniel Graham as he takes up over $5M in cap room, but I’d take a hit of $12M in penalties doing so. It got me thinking what to do with him. As I was playing around with the depth chart to see if anyone would do better at another position than the one they’re currently in, I remembered the Broncos actually acquired Mike Bell as a halfback, and he did pretty well. So I moved him (OA 71/POT 85) and Cecil Sapp (OA 71/POT 71) to HB and then took a look at Graham’s abilities: great run blocking and average pass blocking! Immediately I moved him from TE to FB (OA 85/POT 87) and that alone made him more deserving of his expensive contract (5yrs $30M/$15M bonus; 4yrs left). Defensively, I went pretty crazy with players being cut as long as they weren’t too expensive (freaking Dre’ Bly; cutting him would cost me $12M) or necessary for what I have in mind for my defense (Dumervil and Thomas need some talent to help the D-Line become a force to be reckoned with). The lone LB, D.J. Williams could move to any of the OLB positions if a solid MLB can be found either by trade or Free Agency. Also I took another look and I actually cut a lot of players under 30 years old.

Franchise Tag time, and really the only player worth tagging is Kicker Jason Elam. He’s at 93 OA, but he’s also 37 years old. It’d probably better to trade him and find another kicker via free agency, maybe the draft. So I go ahead and tag him for $2.4M. The Bears also tag ROLB Lance Briggs, which was a disappointment since all we needed to do is find one other OLB and we would be set. Here are the other players to be tagged this off-season:

Giants – K Lawrence Tynes
Patriots – WR Randy Moss
Seahawks – CB Marcus Trufant

This makes for a very interesting FA period as there are a LOT of quality players that can immediately come and play for us this year. With $70.58M in available cap room after all the cuts I made ($78.89M if all players mentioned earlier are traded), the Broncos are looking to make a splash. The question is: whom will they sign? Here are the top-15 free agents this season excluding Kickers and Punters, and I must say there is some quality free agents this off-season.

Albert Haynesworth – DT – 94OA
Alan Faneca – LG – 93OA
Jordan Gross – RT – 92OA
Asante Samuel – CB – 92OA
Nnamdi Asomugha – CB – 91OA
Eugene Wilson – FS – 89OA
Marion Barber – HB – 89OA – RFA
Terrell Suggs – ROLB – 88OA
Jake Scott – RG – 87OA
Ken Hamlin – FS – 87OA
Jeff Faine – C – 86OA
Michael Boley – LOLB – 86OA – RFA
Ben Noll – RG – 85 OA
Shaun Alexander – HB – 85OA
Randall Gay – CB – 84OA
