MLB 2K9: What Went Wrong?
Posted on March 4, 2010 at 12:42 AM.
The past 2 days I've been going back playing both the MLB 2K10 and 2K9 demos on my 360. I know you can only gauge so much from a demo but man, 2K9 looked like it had so much potential.

The R-stick pitching was good. No sinking action on fastballs and no meatball pitches. Yes, it was easier to spot your pitches but still, the overall mechanic was fine.

Hitting with the R-stick seemed more responsive in 2K9 as well. I think this has to do with the camera angle. For me, that view was better for my timing as I just seem way off in 2K10 with that fish-bowl lens they use.

Fielding also goes in 2K9's favor. I like feeling like I have some control over what's happening in the field. In the infield, both games pretty much take over after contact is made but in the outfield, I felt like 2K9 gave you more user control.

Graphics appear to be a wash. 2K10's stadiums and field textures are better but I think 2K9's player models are better.

So, what happened to 2K9? If you played that demo, you'd think you'd have a good game of baseball picking up the retail copy. I know the first baseman pulling his foot off the bag and outfielders dropping fly balls were HUGE bugs out of the box. But, didn't the patch fix (or at least tone done significantly) those issues?

I also remember the injury bug really killed Franchise mode, but at least you could turn injures off (not realistic but that's OK for me if it makes the game play better). Were there any other franchise bugs?

Due to my financial situation, I can't justify paying full-price for any game right now, so I'm looking for cheaper alternatives. I'm considering giving 2K9 a go, unless there are other things wrong with the game I'm not aware of.

I think I've seen 2K9 for $29.99 used at Gamestop. The problems you listed were glaring, including the Franchise freeze. The bugs and weird transitions really killed it for me. I bought it pre-owned a couple of week's after its release and returned it a day later. 2K10 has yet to do me wrong though, and I greatly enjoy it. I think you'd be better off waiting until the price on that dips.
