Make sure you tell your loved ones you love them

Today was a very stressful day. I don't know how many are aware of the school shooting that took place at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, Colo., but it happened today just as school was released for the day.

A single gunman struck two students, thankfully none of the injuries were life-threatening. A teacher tackled the gunman and with the aid of a bus driver, were able to hold him down until the authorities showed up.

My wife teaches at Deer Creek Middle School. She was able to fire off a quick text message to let me know she was safe and that put my mind at ease. But, I still couldn't help think about the worst-case scenarios and just how bad, and deadly, this shooting could have been.

I'm just thankful that I make sure to every night tell my wife that I love her and give her a hug and kiss goodnight, as I usually don't see her in the mornings as she leaves for school before I am awake. She'll often leave me notes or voicemails to tell me she loves me. They seem like such trivial things, but when something of this magnitude happens, it just makes you step back and really appreciate the special bond you share with someone.

I love my wife very much. She was very brave, helping her group of children that were staying after school to complete an assignment to stay calm and not panic, even though there was chaos all around them.

I know I'll be giving my wife extra attention and whatever support she needs during this difficult time. I hope that no one has to go through this kind of ordeal. We never know what tomorrow will bring, so please, don't forget to tell your loved ones that you love and care about them.

I am glad everything is alright. I did hear about the shooting and was glad to hear no life threatening injuries.

We had something like this happen when I was a freshman in High School. The main difference was that the shooting was stopped before anything could happen. A few students made a hit list with a bunch of the athletes from our school. It was found by a teacher and they alerted the principals. Needless to say, parents of those on the list were notified and we had cops positioned in the school. The kids were kicked out and there have been security positioned at the main entrance ever since (this was 1999 when it happened).

And I do the same with my wife. Anytime one of us leaves before the other one, we say we love them. I normally tuck my wife in when I leave in the mornings and she is still sleeping.
