NCAA Football 06 and PS2 fun
Posted on January 13, 2010 at 10:04 PM.
One of my "resolutions" for 2010 was to try and split my gaming time equally between my Xbox 360 and PS2. Since getting a 2nd PS2 in 2008 for Christmas, I've been hitting up GameStop, eBay, Garage Sales, Craigslist and other venues to pick up games on the cheap. I have close to 15 games in my PS2 library and I believe it has cost me less than $100.

While my 360 is reserved mostly for sports games (I really only play Madden 10, NHL 10 and NBA Live 10 and NFL Head Coach 09 once in a while), I still picked up a few sports titles for the PS2 on those weeks when my 360 is off limits.

One of the titles I picked back up (man, I wish I had just kept my original PS2 so I didn't have to buy some of these games again, lol) was NCAA Football 2006. Man, what a gem of a title! It does so many things right, and the things it doesn't do right aren't glaring enough to detract from the overall experience of the game.

Graphically the game still holds up. In fact, it looks just like NCAA 09 or 10 on the PS2. The controls are smooth and responsive.

I'm playing thru the Race to the Heisman mode as that was something I skipped over my first go 'round. After the combine I decided to enroll at No. 25 Georgia Tech. My first game, we take a 27-7 lead after 3 quarters at No. 20 Auburn. Looks like smooth sailing, right? Nope.

Auburn scores 21 unanswered, including the game-winner with 10 seconds to play and I lose 28-27 in a heartbreaker. Honestly, it was one of the better games of football I've played in a long time.

Shout out to Jistic for his sliders, which still hold up nicely in this game.

Although I lost the game, I'm glad that my extra time with the PS2 has opened my eyes back up to some old gems. NCAA Football 2006 is a blast!

Tomorrow I'm going to fire up Metal Gear Solid 2 and play through that again.

Man Ncaa 06 was incredible. I just wrote a blog on what I wanted to see in Ncaa 11 but they just keep letting me down every year, ill keep dreaming. check out the blog and tell me what you think. Ncaa 06 was awesome though. I also miss Ncaa Baseball on Ps2. I loved recruiting that monster team and hearing the metal bats sound off.

Stl.: I sold my original PS2 right after getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas in 2006. Almost immediately, I regretted the decision, especially after having to suffer through Madden 07, lol.

My wife surprised me last Christmas with a PS2 slim and I was so glad to have it back. It's been a blast to go back and play some of the old classics. A lot of those games still hold up well today, and some current games, like MLB 09 The Show, are rock-solid titles.

Geez: Yeah, NCAA Baseball is a lot of fun. I have both 06 and 07. They are basically the same game, aside from the fact that 07 has more stadiums/teams and the Rock-n-Fire pitching (which doesn't really work). 07's rosters also aren't accurate, but it's not a big deal.

Great game! Started playing again. You have any good 1-AA and historic rosters for NCAA 06?

I still play 06 as well. Still waiting for a next gen NCAA game to really "grab" my attention. Hopefully this year...
