Torn on baseball game for '09
Posted on February 8, 2009 at 01:28 PM.
Well, it's getting close to that time of year: baseball season. I love baseball. Played it growing up and follow the game close as a fan. One of the nice things about living in Colorado is that I'm close to Denver, which allows me to get out to Coors Field (beautiful stadium if you've never been) and see a bunch of Rockies games. I always go for the 3-game series against the Mets (my team) and since moving here, I've taken a small liking to the franchise, although it's easy to see why people here get frustrated when all the best players are allowed to walk away for virtually nothing.

OK, back to the title of this blog. I always make a point to buy a baseball game every season. Last year I played MLB 2k8 for the 360 and while I did like the fielding, pitching and hitting mechanics, the gameplay itself wasn't solid enough to hold my interest more than a few weeks. I wound up going with The Show 08 on PSP. For a handheld, that game played a great game of baseball.

For 2009, I want to run with the console version of either baseball game. The Show 08 will still get play in my PSP, but there's no need to rely on that as my sole baseball platform this year, as I've added a PS2 to my roster. That opens up a new possibility: The Show 09 on PS2.

So this year, I'm trying to make a decision between The Show 09 for PS2 or 2k9 for 360.

On the one hand, The Show will come at a cheaper price, and, since 08 was so good, you know pretty much what you'll be getting with the 09 version. 2k9 is a bit dicey; 2k8 had a lot of issues (meatballs, framerate, etc.) but as mentioned, did do some things well. Question is, has it made enough changes to take the next step and compete with The Show? One bonus for 2k9 is the in-game save feature. If The Show had (anyone?) this for the PS2, I'd be sold. For now, I don't know the answer.

Is there anyone else out there in the same boat as me? What are your deciding factors?

I know I've got a few weeks to decide, so hopefully between now and then I can find all the info. I need to make my decision.

Get a PS3

Seriously though, why not just use your PSP for the Show fix?

not a 2k bash, but its not really possible in just one season for them to even come close to competing with the show, but I know what you are saying, myself end up getting both for the simple fact of loving baseball, and like you said the 2k version has something going for it that the show does not,but the complete package is the show period!!!!!!!

I wish I had a choice. It's 2k9 or nothing for me and my 360. I miss having the Show as an option. I would wait and see what 2k9 does this year 2k8 had some flaws but, showed a lot of potential. The show does look like the champ this year but, I vote on waiting until the final revies.

I don't know about the show on the PS2 but I do know this; The Show 08 on the PS3 was phenomenal (graphics, animations, presentation etc). 2K8 (360) had some positive things but just could not compare to The Show. If the demo for The Show 09 is any indicator then 2K9 has its hands full.

Well, one can only hope they (2K) rights the ship over there with their baseball title - but like rudyjuly said - Get a PS3. The Show alone would make it worth the buy.

as everyone said, the show was very solid last year... 2k9 might be a bit better since there is a new dev. team working on this years title... its a toss up.. i would say if you have the cash, buy the show for ps2 first... check up on reviews after a week or so to see whats up with 2k9

the real answer is "go out and buy a PS3."

I'm actually making the leap either this weekend or next and getting a PS3 JUST for The Show. I'm just tired of having to settle for a second rate baseball game when I know there's something better out there that by all accounts provides everything a true baseball fan could want in a baseball title.

I played the show demo and it is just a Next gen MVP baseball, i like it but i really don't see the greatness in it. everyone i talked to said it is great and what not, i will wait to try 2k9 i do love the pitching in 2k8. that is why blockbuster game pass in the best i will get it for a month try out both baseball games then pick that way.

Thanks for the suggestions to buy a PS3; I can't afford to do that right now, and, honestly, not even if I did have the money it'd be hard to justify adding ANOTHER console to my library as I already have a 360, PS2 and PSP. If I was a single guy, I could get away with that, but since I'm not, I'm not going to try.

Do you still use your PS2? Rumour has it the PS3 will have a price drop in April. Sell your PS2 and games for $100 and buy a $300 PS3. Only costs you $200 plus you get the benefit of Blu Ray!

Rudy, I do still use my PS2. My wife bought me one for Christmas as I had one but sold it a couple of years ago to get a 360. I don't think she'd be too happy with me trading it off, again

I'm sure The Show will be very good on PS2. I'm not one who's overly concerned about graphics.
