INDIANAPOLIS, IN - After an entire year worth of talk about the BCS being dead the devised plan for a 4 team playoff has been replaced with another plan. For the next season, the NCAA will try a relegation system for to try to make the NCAA very competitive and give reward to smaller teams that can thrive in the league. The NCAA is now separated into 4 regions: Northeast, Southeast, Central, and West. From there, there are 4 different tiers that the teams are divided into: Elite, High, Mid, and Low. Here are the divisions for the Southeast:

There are a few things to note. BYU elected to remain an Independent for this season thinking that it would benefit them. However, they would have been selected for the MWC. Since they were not moved up New Mexico remained in the MWC.
Here's how this new system works. The Elite tiers are made up of the best teams in college football. To make it there you need to win. Therefore, if a High tier team wants to make it to the Elite tier they need to win their conference. And vice versa for Mid tier. The only exception is Low tier. Only the best team for the season makes it out of the Independents. That is why BYU will be hurting by staying there. If you finish last in your conference AND there is a team that can be promoted then there the team is to be demoted. There is a small catch. Once you are promoted or demoted you are then frozen in that conference for 2 years. The only exception to the rule is if a team starts the season in the Top 25. Then, that team will be moved up a tier and the team that finished worst in the conference above will be demoted.
The NCAA hopes that this will be a beneficial move to help and increase popularity in college football. They look forward to a successful year and more. There is much more to come, but as the current Preseason Polls stand, there is only one team that is in the Top 25 not from the Elite tier: Texas Tech.
