The Curtain Call
Posted on January 19, 2013 at 07:46 PM.
This is from May 2011....

Im sure most people are familiar with the "Curtain Call. It usually happens when a player reaches a milestone, the player comes out of the dugout and is supposed to give a nice wave to the fans thanking them for their support. That's the way it should be. Its supposed to be an honor to receive a curtain call.

Its a tradition that goes back centuries to the age of live theater.
The audience who loved the performance so much would applaud so loudly that the performers would return to the stage to thank the audience for their applause. It was never intended as a "show off" it was always intended to thank the audience.

Reggie Jackson did this very well, he loved the curtain call.
Babe Ruth would tip his cap as he rounded the bases. (which is a unwritten forbidden rule today)

Yesterday I was watching the MIN @ AZ game. Bases loaded in the 8th inning and Kelly Johnson kills a towering Grand Slam to RF. The fans cheered so loud, demanding a curtain call. Kelly Johnson barely walks to the top step of the dugout, gives a half-hearted wave and retreats back to the dugout to suck down some Gatorade.

The first thing that entered my mind was, "WTF is wrong with you?! Why is it so difficult to acknowledge the fans? Why is it so hard to step OUT of the dugout, tip your cap and wave to the fans and say thank you?"

It is because of the fans that you are there. Its because of you that the fans are there. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge that symbiotic relationship?

Have the players gotten so full of themselves that they cant take 5 seconds to acknowledge their employers... the fans?
