Strange Scorelines
Posted on January 10, 2009 at 01:20 PM.
Not just blowouts, although most of them are, but scores that you look at and think "is that a typo":

Manchester United 9 - 0 Ipswich Town - EPL 4th March 1995

This game featured a record margin of victory in the premier league, and until recently, a record for total number of goals. Andy Cole scored 5 of the goals for Man U, which is also a record.

Portsmouth 7 - 4 Reading - EPL 29th September 2007

This is the game that beat the above one for most total goals in a match. It could have been 7 - 5, but David James saved a penalty.

Cleveland Browns 8 - 0 Buffalo Bills - NFL 16th December 2007

Apart from being the first 8-0 finish to an NFL game since 1929, this is a fairly odd score. 2 field goals and a safety were the only scores.

Texas Rangers 30 - 3 Baltimore Orioles - MLB

More insane is that they were 3-0 down at one point. This was the highest score for 110 years. Also, Wes Littleton got a rare 3 inning save.

And Finally, I can't have a blog about strange scores and leave this out:

Georgia Tech 222 - 0 Cumberland - NCAA Football October 7th 1916

The most one sided score in sports history I'm guessing (ignoring cricket, although victories by more than 222 runs are pretty rare) Basically, Cumberland didn't have a football team, but couldn't afford the $3000 forfeit for cancelling the game, so they got their baseball coach and 14 random players and put their names to this game. Ga. Tech gained about 1000 yards, compared to -96 for Cumberland, whose longest play was a 10 yard pass on 4th and 22. Ga. Tech didn't attempt a pass.
