Goats Survive the Storm One Final Time to Win Championship

Score: 21-14

This game had everything a championship game was supposed to have. Solid tackling, flawless adjustments, perfect passes, and an ending that left the winner glad it was over and the loser second guessing his final steps. It was that close. The Storm managed to drive the field in the final minutes of the 4th quarter down 1 point. They had to convert multiple third downs and a 4th and 4. In the end they had 2 shots at the endzone, with the second one almost being caught off a tip.

Neither team could run the ball. The Goats had 26 yards rushing and the Storm had 49. Both teams ran the ball, but the defenses were just that tight in this game. Bennett was lucky to get 5 yards anywhere. A big factor in this game was the Goat's ability to finish drives with touchdowns and not settle for field goals, and that ended up being the huge difference. Two times the Goats punched in scores from inside the five on third down.

On the Offensive side of the ball Drew Pearson broke out and had easily his best game of the season when it counted most. He snagged 6 balls for 144 yards and a massive 70 yard TD score on the second offensive play of the game right after the Storm marched down the field on a 5+ minute drive. Marino also shined, putting balls in extremely tight spaces and hitting receivers in stride to allow them to chew up yards after the catch. He was 10 for 16 for 192 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT's and was never sacked and barely even hit. The offensive line pass blocked as good as it had the whole season, holding Bethea and Hampton to nothing!

For the Storm Pete Metzlaars was the engine that kept drives moving. He ended up with 8 grabs for 96 yards and a TD. Faulk was held in check amassing only 49 yards on 13 carries along with 36 yards on 3 catches for a very human 85 all purpose yards for the superhuman RB. Bartkowski played like the runner-up MVP that he is this game, going 16 for 27 and 200 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT's but was sacked 3 important times.

On the defensive side of the ball the Goats really changed things up from the first time these teams faced and ran a high amount of cover 1 press with their 2 bump corners. Eddie Blackwell led the team in tackles with 5, but no real statistical breakouts are noted. The team played soundly everywhere on the field and really stepped up in short yardage situations, making multiple 3rd and 1 stops.

For the Storm their leader Ronnie Lott led the team in tackles with 6. Their run defense was impeccable, tackling Goat's RB Bennett in the backfield 6 times. Where this defense lacked was getting impact plays against the pass. Yes, they made some nice stops and knocked some passes down, but they just didn't get the big sack or turnover to kill a drive to give their offense momentum and field position.

This game was insanely fun for me to play, and had me fired up for it's entirety. GG Coach Jackal! Every game between us is mistake free and tight. I'm sure we'll meet again soon in another important game... I just hope my luck isn't running out!
