Iron Hold on to Win Streak Against Hungry Warthogs

The score was 24-17. The yards were nearly identical. 122 rushing for the Iron, 123 for the Warthogs. 187 Passing for the Iron, 131 for the Warthogs. Both teams had zero turnovers. This game was a tight hard-fought battle up until the clock read all zeros. Explosive plays by the Iron, Dwight Clark in particular, ended up being the difference in this game.

On offense Clark racked up 5 catches for 122 yards and 3 TD's, all season bests. Jim Hart had 187 yards passing, going an impressive 12 for 17 and 3 TD's (also 0 INT's or sacks). Clark had nearly 3/4 of all the team's receiving yards. Chris Warren earned his paycheck this week grinding out a tough 122 yards on 20 carries, and had his first no-touchdown game of the season.

For the Warthogs "Cool" Joe Montana was solid, but not particularly impressive going 13 for 23 for 131 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Roger Craig really played sharp picking up 119 yards on 17 carries, including a big 41 yarder. As usual John Taylor was the leading reciever snagging 6 balls for 72 yards and a score. As a core the warthog pass catchers had 4 drops, definitely not helping Joe's cause.

On the defensive side of things OLB's Slater and Curry had 6 and 5 tackles respectively for the Iron. Lewis found a lot of action picking up 6 tackles himself. Lambert recorded the game's only sack and 4 tackles of his own. For Oxnard Charlie Waters led the team with 9 tackles as he was busy taking down Warren all day. Carl Banks logged a nice game picking up 4 tackles, including 1 for a loss and getting a pass defensed. Willie Wood had a tough game only picking up 3 tackles, mainly because most of Warren's 6 broken tackles were Wood getting trucked (I had fun doing this).

Overall this was a fundamentally soundly played game. Neither side made huge game changing mistakes. Both teams had balanced attacks and it really came down to the big play, and Clark put it together. As Coach SoonerMagic commented, "I made 2 bad calls on defense and that was the difference". I agree.

GG Coach SoonerMagic! I'm sure our next game will be just as close... I'll have to keep Montana off the field!
