Savages and Iron Collide in Charlotte

This game was a hard hitting battle throughout it's entirety. Both teams were able to follow their gameplans on offense for the most part. What ended up deciding the game was third downs. The Savages were 0 for 6 on 3rd downs and just had to live off the big run play. Even though Charlotte chewed up 200+ yards rushing, they couldn't mix in enough passing to string together long drives.

On the offensive side of the ball Barry Sanders continued his run at the OS South MVP. He had 183 Yards on 22 carries and 1 touchdown, which could've been 5 touchdowns if not for clutch Touchdown-saving tackles by the Iron. Ickey got his shuffle on with a score in the 2nd half and also broke a 20+ yard run. Dave Krieg struggled going 4 for 11 for a meager 56 yards and no scores.

For the Iron Jim Hart played well going 10 of 15 for 162 yards, 2 TD's and 1 INT. He was not sacked for the third straight game and has only been tackled once the whole season! Chris Warren elipsed 100 yards for the third time this season gaining 129 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. He has a score in all 4 games this season. Rob Moore put together his best game of the season catching 4 balls for 92 yards and a TD including a 53 yard bomb.

On the defensive side of the ball for Carolina Harry Carson had 4 big tackles and Eugene Robinson had 5. OLB Tim Moody caught his first interception of the season. For the Iron Torrin Curry led with 7 tackles, including 2 for a loss, and 2 passes defensed. Lambert also contributed heavily with 5 tackles and a pass defensed. Elvin Bethea tallied his 7th sack of the season.

In the 2nd half the Iron were able to keep a 10 point spread which finally did put the Savages in a position they didn't want to be in and that also contributed to their demise.

For the third time in 4 games the Iron go negative in the turnover ratio and find a way to win. It is very odd to see a 4-0 team with only 2 turnovers forced all season. The Iron really do play a different brand of football, which may be more reliable than hoping for turnovers. Their days are numbered if the negative ratios continue though. Maybe all the intangibles are paying off, who knows.

GG Coach Ducetrey!
