Iron Hold on Against Late-brewing Storm
This game felt all-but wrapped up in the 3rd Quarter with the Iron sitting comfortably on a 24-7 lead and a workhorse RB in Chris Warren who was brought to Pittsburgh for this exact reason: to end games. The Storm just had a field goal blocked to keep the score at 24-7 and everything looked good. Cunningham and the Storm had other ideas. Randall and the crew EXPLODE in the 4th quarter. They racked up yards in the 4th that seemed impossible to accumulate earlier in the game. Even with the late game burst, it was too little too late and a big 54 yard field goal kicked by Del Greco in the 1st quarter ended up being the difference. The blocked FG kept the Storm out of OT.

On the offensive side of the ball, Warren of the Iron obtained 79 yards on 14 carries, a touchdown AND a big fumble lost in the 2nd half. The Iron's Jim Hart was 7 for 11, 204 yards, 2 TD's and a single INT. Both Moore and Clark were on the receiving end of those TD's. For the Storm Cunningham was 20 for 35 for 285 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Ricky Watters had a rushing TD but was held to a mediocre 5 yards on 6 carries. Shannon Sharpe was very involved pulling in 6 catches for 98 yards.

On the defensive side the Iron forced no turnovers, but accumulated 8 sacks which suffocated the Storm for 3 quarters. Elvin Bethea led the charge with 3 sacks alone. Dick Anderson was the Iron's leading tackler with 7 total tackles and a pass defensed. Credit has to go to the front 7 who got those sacks and kept the storm in the teens for rushing yards. For the Storm "the Boz" Brian Bosworth got a nifty interception. Robert Brazile led the Storm in tackles with 5 and he got credit for forcing the big fumble in the 2nd half.

The bottom line is 8 sacks was too much for the Storm to overcome, even with 2 turnovers in their back pocket. The Iron were just glad the game ended when it did. Two more minutes and there may have been a different winner in this one.

GG the rest of the season Coach Jackal!
