I love the fact that NCAA and now Madden seem less gimicky and are focusing on core gamers and core gameplay.
I have been playing old PS2 games and have noticed some interesting things. NCAA 2k3 has a cool color-based package system (which adds a layer of realism) and it has an actual broadcast cam (as opposed to simply viewing the field from a sideline cam).
GameBreaker 2003 has something called Coaching Career mode. You get to choose to work at a school as an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator or a special-teams coach. The idea is that if you meet your objectives, you get promoted or are offered similar positions at better schools.
The reason that this feature has little potential is that most gamers enjoy the feeling of control when it comes to developing and running an entire program as opposed to focusing on certain duties which don't necessarily transfer well to gaming.
