Reactions to the Peavy Trade
Posted on August 1, 2013 at 09:37 AM.
I thought this would need it's own blog post. The Red Sox Acquired Jake Peavy In a Three Team Trade. Involved in that trade was the Tigers, White Sox, and of course, the Red Sox. I will go thru each team, with my reaction to each team's acquisitions.

Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox got the top pitcher on the thin market. Jake Peavy, 32, was acquired from the ChiSox along with struggling reliever Bryan Villareal. Peavy is 8-4, with a 4.28 ERA with 76 Ks. Mediocre stats for the former Cy Young award winner. He is controllable thru 2015, so it also gives Boston depth and certainty at starting pitcher.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers acquired Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox. The deal made sense for them with the pending suspension of current SS Johnny Peralta. Iglesias is hitting a slash of .330/.376/.409 in 234 plate appearences, and 215 ABs. He is known for being consistently inconsistent at the plate, but he is highly regarded for his Gold-Glove calibre defense at short and third.

Chicago White Sox: They are probably the winners of this trade, as they beefed up the thin farm system. They acquired 3 low tier prospects in Cleuluis Rondon, Frank Montas, and JB Wendelkin. But the headliner was top prospect, Avisail Garcia. Garcia has been called "Little Miggy" by many, due to his identical size, and ability. He can easily be a major factor in Chicago's future.

Boston Verdict: Win
Detroit Verdict: Loss
Chicago Verdict: Win
Winner: Chicago

As to how you see this as a loss for Detroit:

They gained a defense-only guy, who had 2 lucky months. As well as lost a top prospect. They are the losers in my book. Before you start saying "But Iglesias is having a good year", just note he is EXTREMELY inconsistent. 2013 Iglesias in AAA: .202/.262/.319, July Iglesias 2013: .176/.215/.176. He is obviously cooling down. At his peak, I see him at .250/.300/.310 if he's lucky. Garcia has 5 tools, and knows how to utilize them. They gave up Garcia for Iglesias, and Garcia>>>>Iglesias

To fill the Peralta gap, I'd rather have Iglesias than Santiago. I see that Garcia is talented, but prospects come and go all the time.

I'm sorry, but that statement makes me want to punch a brick wall. Garcia is a TOP prospect, and a 5 tool player. That is a special kind of person. Iglesias has 2 of the 5 tools. Garcia isn't just any ordinary prospect, he has a special talent that helps him out alot. Garcia>>>>>Iglesias. You could've gotten WAAAAAAAY more back for him to fill the SS hole.

Detroit got what they wanted for the time being. That's all that Dombrowski cares about.
