More MLB 13: The Show Observations (One Month In) Stuck
Posted on April 1, 2013 at 10:02 PM.

It's been nearly a month since MLB 13: The Show released and about a week since the first official update dropped. MLB Live started today, and we expect the OS Full Minor roster sometime this week. Basically, if you haven't yet experienced this stellar game, it's not too late; the season's just getting started.

However, since my official OS review, I've made a couple of observations that are worth noting:
  • The "stuttering," which I didn't see at all during my review time pre-launch, did show itself from time to time in my game. For those of you who saw it repeatedly, I can appreciate your frustration. I am happy to report that I haven't seen any of this since the update.
  • While I'm waiting on the Full Minor roster set, I've been playing a lot of Road to the Show. This mode is not something I spent more than a few weeks with in the past. But the additions of new camera angles, streamlined base-running, and improved fielding controls have me in this mode at least once a day.
  • On the other hand, I've not revisited Diamond Dynasty that much. I will try again, but it's not been very compelling (for me) at this point.
  • I will still argue that the commentary is pretty good--at least in a vacuum. But it seems very dated and repetitive for those of us who have played this game annually.
  • The ball physics, at least off the bat, are really more improved then I let on in my review. I think time has allowed me to see the intricacies of the engine more than the crunch of review time. I love the "weak" or poor quality hits that seem to cut through the grass, spinning. The more you play this year's version of The Show, the more little stuff you'll see.
  • I'm surprised at how addicting the "Challenge of the Week" is.
  • Post-season mode is fun and the atmosphere is pretty good. I've played through a few Wildcard games that were tense until the final innings. This feature is late, but still very welcome.

I'll take a better look at The Show Live and simulate a season later this week.

My observations so far. The commentary has taken a step back.
I do like the ball physics, and hit variety. I hit alot of choppers.
Im only 10 games into a season mode.
Feels like THE SHOW...

I've only played post season mode but the commentary seems good in that mode

I am 40 games into my franchise and this game is outstanding.

Have had bullpen/pinch hit freeze now in 3 of my last 4 online league games. At this point league play is unplayable for me unless I make no moves at all, now if my opponent makes a move Im done for.

The timing window being opened up while maintaining the integrity of the game is probably the biggest improvement in my opinion the series has made. Playing 2009, 2011 and 2012 the game always felt the same while hitting. 2013 is really ground-breaking and the feature that'll keep you clicking play next game.

Haven't played that much, as I am waiting for OSFM. Although, I did play a minors v. majors with the Red Sox OSFM and it looked good. Most fun I've had in a while!

Physics are much much improved and make this a much much better game than last year. My stuttering is 100% gone since update.

I really, really liked MLB 12. Probably the most fun I've had with the Show. I borrowed the game from my brother and after 5 games I am not going to buy. I DO think it's slightly better but I don't think it's $60 better. You probably have to play a lot to see the subtle improvements but I don't see the big jump some are seeing. It's similar to 12 when you adjust the sliders. At $40 I would probably buy it. Otherwise I will wait for next year as I think buying every other year can keep it fresh.

I agree with Rudy above. I think 13 is a good game, but it's not worth $60 to upgrade from 12. Yes, I like the hitting window being opened a bit, but I'd rather have silk smooth animations and no frame rate drops when the ball gets thrown across the diamond. (something I see all the time) To me 12 was one of the most polished sports games i've played.
