Why we love named rosters.

In 1985 virtual football was first introduced to me in the form of NES's " 10-Yard Fight. I was 10 years old at the time and had already seen my football team the Redskins win their first Super Bowl and third NFL Championship. I knew all the players on the team by number, position and name, but 10-Yard Fight had no names to go along with it. It was 1988 when I first realized how important named rosters for football teams would be to me. Tecmo Bowl for the NES had just been released and it featured named players for the 12 teams it had. Nothing else made me more happier that being able to score a touchdown with Timmy Smith or Art Monk of the Redskins.

Madden Football had just started using the real names of players in 1996 almost 10 years after Tecmo first did it and Joe Montana football did it in 1994. But it was really with Madden 99 when I really started getting into rosters. Madden 2001 turned me into a roster fanatic and made me fall in love with being able to edit rosters.

There is no better feeling for me. When I know I have the rosters the way I think they should be, it adds a whole new level to your experience when playing any sports game. Being able to break tackles with your favorite rb or stop that running back with your favorite defensive player just makes it that much more fun.

We love named rosters because you can score with your favorite player. We love named rosters because you can set new records with your favorite player. We love named rosters because they are real life players in that game which we can manipulate and use how we please. Named rosters to me are an escape from everyday worries and allow me to immerse myself in this virtual football world than can only interrupted by a power outage. Well probally dinner time as well.

So yes we love named rosters and every year we go through the same agonizing waiting period before we all can start to enjoy our named rosters. We work with others to try and perfect them, or thank others for their hard work for providing us with them as well.

So lets not forget why we love named rosters. Without them sports games would be nothing and we would be nothing.

I am not a pro writer, which I'm sure most of you will be able to tell, but I know why I love named rosters. Do you?

Absolutely. For NCAA fans it also helps introduce you to the real players as well. With 120 Div I teams and constant roster turnover, having named rosters can actually educate you at the same time.
