So, anyone want to help me solve a 6 1/2 year old mystery?
First, a little background . . .
My family (my mom, myself, my grandma, moms 2 sisters, their husbands, and my 6 cousins) went to Corolla Beach, NC for Thanksgiving of 2004. Corolla is located at the northern edge of North Carolina's Outer Banks not all that far from the Virginia border. On the morning of the 26th we decided to drive up the beach beyond where the road ends mainly to see the wild horses but as we were driving we came across this "thing" sitting on the beach.
Sorry the pictures are of poor quality, but I paused the Hi8 tape and took a picture of my screen with my phone as I don't have any better way to capture the images at the moment. As you can see the object was a large white cylinder with an antenna? at one end (pardon my cousin hanging on it) and a heavy rusted chain (not visible) at the other end. The words "Property of US Navy" were written on the side and there was also a fair amount of graffiti indicating it had been there for some time.
We had no idea what this thing was, do you? I know we've got some Navy guys here who will probably be able to ID it.

that is huge I would assume it's off a warship maybe damaged in a hurricane or something.

It appears as though its some sort of buoy but it's too large and at least where I am buoys are indicated by color as of which direction you are to go. ex. Green means you move to the right Red means move to the left of the buoy. So, it must have been a part of a ship or possibly it was marking a spot in the ocean of some importance to the Navy at the time...
