Practice
On the heels of leading a come from behind victory in week 6 over the LSU Tigers, Buck Rogers has been elected to be a team captain by the players and coaching staff. This means that he will be given some latitude to provide input on play calling in certain situations. The Gators did not look sharp in practice this week but are favored over the Auburn Tigers.
Game - #16 Florida (5-1) at Auburn (3-3)
The field conditions were once again sloppy with rain pouring down all day. The Tigers won the toss and elected to get the ball first in the second half. Buck Rogers began the game hot, connecting on his first 5 passes and leading the Gators into position to take a 3-0 lead on their first drive of the game. The Gators defense limited the Tigers to a 3 and out on their first drive of the game. Rogers continued to look sharp as he connected on 4/5 passes on the Gators next drive, including a 26 yard TD pass down the sideline.
The Tigers responded with a field goal early in the second quarter. Rogers converted two 3rd downs and moved the ball into position for another field goal to give the Gators a 13-3 lead with just over one minute remaining in the first half. The Tigers turned the ball over and the Gators appeared to be running the clock down, but Scott Smith broke free for a big gain that set up a long field goal attempt. The field goal would go off the right upright. The Gators led 13-3 at halftime.
The Tigers were unable to get anything going on the opening drive of the second half. Rogers would aid that though when he made a bad throw right into the waiting arms of a Tigers defensive back. The Tigers would capitalize with a TD. The Gators were unable to get anything going on their next drive. The Tigers seized momentum and took their first lead of the day at 17-13 late in the 4th Quarter.
The Gators looked to Rogers for some of that come from behind magic that he had shown the previous week. Rogers was able to respond as he connected on consecutive big gains, the second of which was a 50 yard TD pass to propel the Gators to a 20-17 lead with just over a minute left in the game. The Gators defense, however, was unable to get the Tigers off of the field and allowed the game winning TD with :04 seconds left. The Tigers won 24-20.
Player of the game honors went to Auburn tailback David Grigsby who tallied 41 carries for 194 yards and 3 TDs. Buck Rogers had a solid day, finishing 14/29 for 265 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.
The Gators have some time to recover and prepare for the stretch run in week 8 as they have a bye.
