Practice
Buck Rogers and the Florida Gators got back to work on the practice field following the tough loss to #1 Alabama in week 5. Practice began slow as they were trying to solidify their screen game. As practice went on, Rogers solidified his position as a veteran quarterback.
Game - #18 Florida (4-1) at #12 LSU (3-2)
A sellout crowd at Tiger Stadium greeted the Florida Gators and Freshman QB Buck Rogers. The Gators won the toss and were able to force a turnover on the Tigers opening drive of the game. Buck Rogers converted a 4th down attempt to extend the drive and then completed a pass down inside the Tigers' 5 yard line. The Gators would score a TD when HB Smith scored from 2 yards out. The Tigers once again gave the ball back to the Gators on a turnover. After 2 unsuccessful runs, Rogers once again found his favorite target, TE Smith, for a third down conversion as the first quarter ended.
Rogers' began the second quarter trying to force a pass into a tight coverage and was intercepted inside the redzone. The Tigers would take the ball down the field on a long drive to tie the game at 7. Rogers shook off the result of the previous drive. Rogers connected with a wide receiver in the flats and a missed tackle turned the play into a large gain of over 50 yards. HB Smith added his second TD run of the day to finish the drive an put the Gators ahead 14-7. The Tigers would add a TD to tie the game at 14-14 just before halftime.
The Gators took the opening drive of the third quarter down to inside the 2 yard line but were only able to get a field goal on the drive. The key play of the drive was a pass over the middle from Rogers. The Gators had 3 attempts from inside the 2 yard line but were unable to convert and settled for the field goal. The Gators took a 17-14 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers methodically moved the ball down the field and would reclaim the lead when they scored a TD to make the score 21-17 with just over 2 minutes left in the game. The Gators tried consecutive runs that did not fool the Tigers' defense. Rogers was looking at 3rd & 9 when he connected with a wide open receiver over the middle for a 76 yard go-ahead TD pass.
The Tigers were unable to gain a first down and the Gators would run the clock out to escape Death Valley with a 24-21 win. The player of the game for the Florida Gators was HB Scott Smith who totaled 56 yards rushing and 2 TDs on 23 carries. Rogers finished 13/16 for 243 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.
The Gators make second consecutive road trip in week 6 as they travel to Auburn to face the Tigers in another SEC battle.
