Practice
Buck Rogers performed well in his first week and was called upon to finish the 4th quarter when the starting QB went down with an undisclosed injury. Rogers would take all of the snaps in practice with the first team offense but it appeared that the pressure of his first potential start was getting to him as he was still unable to gain enough of the coach's trust to challenge for the full time starting position.
Game - UAB at #21 Florida Gators
Despite the lack of trust, Rogers got the call to have his first career start. Rogers completed his first pass of the game and relied heavily on the running game to settle him into the game. The first drive of the game ended when Rogers completed a corner route with a nice precision pass for his first career TD pass. The offense struggled to move the ball for most of the remaining first half, due in part to the play calling. Rogers threw his first career interception when he made a bad read and threw the ball directly into the waiting arms of a UAB linebacker. Rogers responded at the end of the half with his second TD pass.
The Gators trailed at halftime 17-14 but marched down the field on their opening possession of the second half and took the 21-17 lead. Rogers threw his second interception of the game when he made the right read but a poor throw. Rogers would connect with his tight end on a well executed play action pass for his third TD of the game early in the fourth quarter. The Gators would tack on another garbage TD late in the fourth to make the final score 35-17 and push their season record to 2-0.
The player of the game was running back Scott Smith who ended the day with 31 carries for 199 yards and 2 TDs. Rogers had an excellent first career start and finished 13/21 for 243 yards 3 TDs and 2 INTs.
The Gators will host their 3rd straight home game to begin the SEC season when Tennessee comes to Gainesville next week.
