Immersion vs. imagination
Posted on April 8, 2010 at 11:11 AM.
When I was much younger I played "football" on my atari. Remember the three on three game seemingly played by square tank looking fellows? Well anyway back in those days (early 80's) I used to play that game quite a bit. However in my mind it was Dan Fouts dropping back and throwing to either Charlie Joiner or Kellen Winslow. I remember quite vividly actually enjoying that game despite its lack of appearance, and total lack of realism. I provided all the fun and immersion with my imagination.

Fast forward ten years or so and the wonderful Sega Genesis. I remember playing the first LAKERS VS. CELTICS game. While certainly primitive, and repetitive, all I cared about was the fact that the cpu would actually double team you on certain spots on the floor. Again my imagination provided the gaps in realism.

To the here and now. We have games like Mlb the show series that provides so much realism and graphics, our imagination is nearly moot. Custom music, realistic players, and game play that mimics so very closely the real thing we are left with no such gaps to fill in with our minds. Now do not get me wrong I love the realism, the ability to reasonably sim actually seasons. I just don't want previous generations of games to be scoffed at. After all, in a few years today's games will be mocked for their weak graphics and poor game play.
