Things Get Darkest Before Dawn: The End of The 2020 White Sox Season

Coming into the 2020 season, the White Sox were expecting to see some success but were still a year away according to most projections and despite a horrid finish to the regular season that saw them fall to the 7th seed in the American League, they still found themselves in a best-of-3 playoff series with the Oakland A's. Manager Rick Renteria decided to start rookie right-hander Dane Dunning in the rubber match but pulled the young hurler after giving up just two hits before he would get the chance to get the third out of the first inning. This move was a harbinger of the White Sox's fate on this night as they came up short in a heartbreaking 6-4 loss that may have ultimately sealed Renteria's fate as the White Sox and Renteria "mutually parted ways" just a few weeks later.

In a move that saw the majority of the fanbase and media questioning the entire front office and the hiring process in general, the White Sox announced that Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa would be the next White Sox bench boss. The hiring was viewed as controversial not only because of La Russa's pending DUI but also because he was evidently, the only candidate considered for the job -- a move that didn't seem to be made in unison with the other members of the White Sox front office, including general manager Rick Hahn.
