Bringing Out The Brooms; Jays Sweep Rays At Home
TORONTO -- The wait is over. The Toronto Blue Jays finally swept the Rays at home at the Rogers Center last night, edging the last place team by a narrow score of 5-4. The Tampa Bay Rays got off to a fast start against rookie Drew Hutchison, who was shooting for his second win of the season since being called up from Triple-A Buffalo.

Following a single by Ben Zobrist to lead off the ballgame for the Rays, former Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar quickly gave the Rays a 1-0 lead with a double down the right field line that would easily score Zobrist from second base. After star third baseman Evan Longoria struck out for the first out of the inning, veteran Luke Scott would hit the third Rays double of the inning to score Escobar from second for a 2-0 lead. With Scott at second base, Hutchison would proceed to settle down and strikeout outfielders Matt Joyce and Desmond Jennings.

All this would happen before rookie Matt Moore touched the mound. Moore (2-4), had hopes of picking up his third win of the season. However, the Blue Jays had other plans. Leadoff man and speedster Emilio Bonifacio would single to start the inning for the Jays. Bonifacio would then use his speed and aggressively steal second base and third base with Brett Lawrie up to bat. Lawrie would then hit a hard ground ball that hit off of a diving Evan Longoria’s glove for a single that would score Bonifacio from third base to cut the lead in half. “I was kinda expecting Boni [Bonifacio] to take off for second during my AB [at-bat]. I really didn’t think that he’d take third though. Everything worked out great for us I guess.” said Lawrie about the play after the game.

Things did work out great for the Jays as Brett Lawrie would steal second base on a curveball that bounced on the plate from Moore. With star slugger Jose Bautista batting, Lawrie held his ground at second base, only to watch the slugger pop out in foul territory, making the first out of the inning. Fellow slugger Edwin Encarnacion would pick up his teammate though, singling up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Lawrie and tie the game up at 2-2. The Jays weren’t done there though, as Jeff Baker hit a slow roller to the pitcher that should have ended the inning with two outs, however, Moore threw the ball past first baseman Luke Scott allowing Encarnacion to score from second base and Jeff Baker to move into second base.

Things would stay the same heading into the bottom of the third inning, with Bautista to lead off for the Jays followed by Encarnacion. Bautista would draw a walk off of Moore, who seemed unfocused. Encarnacion would make Moore pay for the walk as he hit his ninth homerun of the season on Moore’s 53rd pitch of the game, 28 which came in the first inning. The Rays would try to make a comeback when Ben Zobrist doubled in the fourth inning off of Hutchison that scored two runs. But that was as close as they would get as Hutchison would shut down the Rays until the sixth inning, where Steve Delabar would come on and strikeout the side. Casey Janssen pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his 15th save of the season.

The Blue Jays stay at home to take on the New York Yankees in another quick two game set. The Yankees trail the Blue Jays by one game in the American League East standings.
