Costly Loss: Jays Outfielder Cabrera Leaves Game As Twins Walk-off

MINNESOTA -- The Blue Jays lost the second game of their four game series against the Minnesota Twins on the road at the spacious Target Field, but their concerns no longer lie on the outcome of their game. Left fielder Melky Cabrera was injured running down the first base line on his groundout to Twins shortstop Eduardo Escobar that scored Jose Reyes in the sixth inning. Cabrera grabbed his leg as he stepped on the first base bag and fell to the ground after slowing down. “It’s really unfortunate to see something like that happen. The game doesn’t matter anymore when that happens.” said Twins first baseman Justin Morneau. Cabrera was replaced by Rajai Davis in the bottom half of the sixth inning and was seen boarding an ambulance.

When asked about the injury after the game, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said “We don’t know the severity of the injury at this moment but we do know that it is in the leg area. Hopefully it won’t keep him out too long but I’ll update you guys tomorrow.”

The injury overshadowed the walk-off victory that the Twins pulled out. Trevor Plouffe hit a 375 foot home run down the left field foul line that gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the lead was short lived as a Jose Reyes tripled followed an RBI groundout by Melky Cabrera tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom half, the Twins re-claimed their lead when left fielder Josh Willingham hit his sixth home run of the season into the left field seats to give the Twins the 2-1 edge. Once again, the Twins lead would be short lived as Canadian Brett Lawrie stole third base with catcher Josh Thole up to bat before Thole would reach base on a throwing error by Twins first baseman Ryan Doumit, allowing Lawrie to score from third.

Things would stay the same until the bottom of the ninth when Brad Lincoln (1-1) came on out of the bullpen to pitch for the Blue Jays. After striking out Josh Willingham and Justin Morneau in order for the first two outs of the inning, Ryan Doumit made up for his error by hitting a double to the outfield gap. This set the table for pinch hitter Wilkin Ramirez, who was pinch hitting for Chris Parmelee. Ramirez promptly took a first pitch offering from Lincoln right back up the middle. Doumit would slide in safely and score from second base despite a strong throw by center fielder Colby Rasmus.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon as Josh Johnson (4-2) takes the mound for the Blue Jays against Mike Pelfrey (2-1) of the Twins.
