Hutchison Strikes Out 13; Wins Season Debut On The Road

Drew Hutchison looked unfazed by the bright lights of the major leagues after making his first start of the season on the road at Target Field against the Minnesota Twins. The young right hander, freshly called up from Triple-A Buffalo, struckout thirteen batters in eight strong innings while allowing just five hits. The experienced Minnesota lineup had trouble all night with the righty. “He was throwing untouchable stuff tonight.”, said Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe, who committed two errors on the nights.

The Blue Jays usually powerful offense was lead by a different aspect tonight, as it was mainly speed that allowed the Jays to pull out the win, with no home runs being hit by either team. Brett Lawrie picked up his first triple of the season on a drive to the right-center field gap. Emilio Bonifacio, Rajai Davis and Jose Reyes both picked up steals during the game, but it was a different story for Melky Cabrera. Cabrera was picked off at first base by Brian Duensing in the third inning after he was caught off-guard and looking towards the dugout.

Lacking home run power at Target Field, the Blue Jays relied on a Melky Cabrera doubled to score a run before an RBI double by catcher Josh Thole scored Cabrera. Jose Reyes then followed up with a RBI single that allowed Thole to score from third after he advance on a base hit and a groundout.

Ryan Doumit hit his fourth doubled of the season off Hutchison, one of the Twins’ only five hits. But the biggest blow of the night for the Jays came off a Josh Willingham single up the middle off of a Casey Janssen fastball that scored Eduardo Escobar, who barely beat out the tag on a great throw by Blue Jays center fielder Colby Rasmus. Janssen would later work out of a jam to pick up his twelfth save of the season.

The Blue Jays continue their series at the pitcher friendly park at Target Field with Mark Buehrle going up against Twins starter Samuel Deduno.
