Jose Bautista and Henry Blanco Lead The Offense With Homers

Blue Jays Snap Two Game Skid, Down Angels On The Road

LOS ANGELES -- R.A. Dickey finally looked like the pitcher that the Toronto Blue Jays thought that they were acquiring when they traded their top prospects for him. Dickey (1-2) picked up his first win of the season by allowing just two hits in a complete game shutout over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
On the offensive side of the board, Jose Bautista hit his eighth home run of the season and backup catcher Henry Blanco hit his fourth home run of the season. For Bautista, it was his second home run in as many games after he homered off of Derek Lowe in the Blue Jays’ loss to the Rangers yesterday afternoon.
Jered Weaver (2-2) picked up the loss for the Angels as they continue to struggle with the absence of star outfielder Mike Trout, who is expected to miss most of the season with a fractured shin. Weaver pitched well, giving up only two runs in five and a third innings pitched, including Jose Bautista’s solo home run in the first. Weaver was pulled from the game after giving up a sacrifice fly to Melky Cabrera that allowed the second run of the game to plate for the Jays.
The 38-year old knuckleballer looked good on the mound after having a no-hitter through the first 7 and a third innings of the ball game before Angels outfielder Kole Calhoun hit a double to the right-center field gap. Dickey would then give up a bunt single to Angels centerfielder Peter Bourjos. With runners on the corners and just one out, Dickey proceeded to get two of his seven strikeouts on the next two batters to end the threat.
“R.A. had the best knuckleball that I’ve seen in a long time today. If he keeps doing this he’ll be back in the Cy Young race in no time.” said Blue Jays catcher Josh Thole. Thole was the catcher for the New York Mets when Dickey won the Cy Young award last season in New York.
Following Henry Blanco’s two RBI game, John Gibbons was asked by the press if he has ever considered giving the starting job to Blanco. Gibbons responded say, “I’ll do what I have to do. Right now it seems that Blanco is playing well and has good numbers but you have to keep in mind that he’s only played in four or five games.”
The Blue Jays continue their four game series against the Angels tomorrow night as Brandon Morrow (4-1, 2.02) will take the mound for the Blue Jays against tough lefty C.J. Wilson (2-1, 3.58).
