Byrd's Squeeze Bunt Propels Mets Past Jays In Series Opener
TORONTO -- Small ball. The New York Mets used small ball to squeeze past the Blue Jays for their 19th win of the season, with outfielder Marlon Byrd laying down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to score Justin Turner from third base in the seventh inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

The Mets would hold on to the lead, with former Blue Jay Frank Francisco pitching a scoreless eighth inning and closer Bobby Parnell netting his second save of the season to preserve the victory for starter Johan Santana (5-0) who went six strong innings, giving up six hits and one run to the quiet Blue Jays offense.

Former Mets catcher Josh Thole (who came to Toronto in the R.A. Dickey trade), singled up the middle in the bottom of the second inning scoring Edwin Encarnacion from third base following his leadoff double and a groundout from Jeff Baker. “I was down in the count and just tried to make contact. [i] got enough of the ball and picked up the RBI.” said Thole.

The Mets got a lucky bounce when Colin Cowgill’s groundball up the middle ricocheted off the second base bag and dribbled into center field, allowing Marlon Byrd to score from second base to tie the game up.

Johan Santana managed to escape a fifth inning jam when he had to face feared Jays slugger Jose Bautista in with the bases loaded and two outs. However, after a nine pitch battle, Santana was able to get Bautista to pop out to second base to end the inning. “I tried to stay in there but just missed [the] pitch and ended up popping out.” said Bautista.

The Blue Jays continue their series at home against the Mets at the Rogers Center tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 1:05. You can catch the game on Sportsnet Ontario, East, West and Pacific or get your tickets at bluejays.com or call 416-341-1280.
