It's funny how I end up talking about the same teams, but the same teams keep making the same mistakes. In 2001, the Rockets traded Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong for the "steal of the draft" Eddie Griffin(RIP). Griffin never lived up to this and the Rockets released him a few seasons later. Jefferson went to a Nets team that developed into serious contender but they were unable to get that ring. If he had stayed he would have likely stayed on the bench but would earn valuable minutes and likely would grab the starting job at the 3 spot. The rockets wouldn't have done much better in 01-02 and would have still earned the honor of drafting Yao Ming. A core of Ming, Francis, Mobley, Jefferson and later McGrady could have competed with the dominate Suns,Lakers and Spurs teams they would have faced in the next few seasons and could have been the surprised upset team in the West playoff series's.
