After a disappointing post season, as GM of the Bruins, I've decided to go after a partial retooling of the team. One of the shocking features of the offseason: Long time Bruin and captain, Yuri Smirnov retired after 18 seasons in the NHL at age 37.
Career Statistics for Yuri Smirnov: 1,314 Games Played, 453 Goals, 685 Assists, 1,138 Points.
Offseason Plans: My scouts have been paying close attention to a few players this season. All 3 are forwards, two being defensive forwards, the other a solid looking scoring winger. My intentions are to trade big RW Frederick Howes, and listen to offers involving the Moller brothers, Cameron Callahan and Brad Stokes. Hopefully I will get some draft picks, as well as affordable role players for these elite level players.
With the retirement of Smirnov and the hopeful trades of a few of these players, I hope to be able to make a splash on the free agent market, as some big name Free Agents are available.
Draft Day: My goal this day was to acquire as many picks as I could. Unfortunately, I used 4 of my 5 phones unsuccessfully..5th one worked
To Anaheim Ducks: RW Frederick Howes (90), D Ruslan Khavanov (83).
To Boston Bruins: 2030 1st Round Pick (Anaheim), 2030 1st Round Pick (Boston).
TradeTalk: Anaheim and Boston continue their good relationship, as Frederick Howes goes to a team loaded with former Bruins and Boston gets 2 1st rounders to go along with their 26th overall pick acquired from Nashville at the Trade Deadline. This clears the way for Colin Meldere to get more playing time, as well as gives Boston an extra $7.5 Million in cap space.
1st round Draft Results:
4th overall pick: Pete Anderson, WHL, 75, (C,C,B-) Potential.
24th overall pick: Brett Hilbert, WHL, 72, (C,C,B-) Potential.
26th overall pick: Patrick Stajan, WHL, 74, (B,C,B) Potential.
No 2nd round picks:
3rd Round: Max Pedretti, WHL
4th Round: Pascal Carle, QMJHL
5th Round: Fred Brimanis, USA. Wade Lupul, USA
6th Round: Michal Rozitis, Extraliga. Kari Saarinen, SM-Liiga
7th Round: James McCarty, WHL.
Not the strongest draft I've had, but there are a few players who have potential to make the NHL starting roster one day.
Free Agency & Summer Transactions:
Hired UFA shut down centerman, Carson Perreaux. Originally drafted by Washington in 2013, he brings a veteran presence to the forward core, is a fast skater with virtually only defensive and athletic stats. 207 Points in 776 Career Games.
Traded Kenneth Brind'Amour, who's shut down spot had been taken up by Perreaux, to the Carolina Hurricanes for Johan Persson, a 6'2", 209 lb shut down defenceman from Sweden and 2031 2nd round pick.
Traded Jacques Poirier and Franklin Morneau & 2036 2nd and 3rd round picks to Colorado for Matthieu Belanger, a 6'6" 218 lbs defenceman who spent most of his career with me before I had to trade him for cap reasons 3 seasons ago.
Going to split the first 3 months of the year between the Moller brothers, then probably trade one for a few depth players, $10 million between two goaltenders is a little much.
Edit: Due to cap problems, I had to make a decision on the Moller's sooner than I wanted. I went for youth, keeping Calle Moller, trading Par to Phoenix along with Matthieu Belanger (yes, just re-acquired him) for another former defenceman, Tuomo Makkonen (90 overall), and Eric Walz (G, 80 overall).
Then I traded Walz for a cheaper goaltender with the same overall, Samu Lehtivuori, from Anaheim.
Will do roster and stuff in a different blog, again.
