Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be taking an in depth look at some of the features on next-generation consoles that could help shape the future of sports gaming.
About five years ago, when NCAA Football 2010 released on the Xbox 360 and PS3, I was enamored with the idea of being able to play a dynasty online with friends. It was a novel concept - one that is still blossoming into a staple of sports gaming. Still, there was always something missing from the experience. There was still a fundamental disconnect between your world of gaming, and that of your peers. The share button on the PS4 might go a long way in bridging that gap, especially once the technology is honed. There are three different aspects of Sony's "share button", each with a separate purpose.
Upload a Photo:
There is still a lot to be desired of the feature that allows you to take screenshots and share them with your friends. For one, unless the game has some kind of replay system already implemented (think most sports games), it's just about impossible to time a good looking screenshot. Not to mention, the feature lacks any kind of filtering options that could help users give their photographs an individual touch.
Upload a Video:
So far, uploading videos has been a mixed bag. Unfortunately, as it stands, videos can't be uploading to places like YouTube. Sharing them with your friends on Facebook and Playstation Network are the only current options, and sharing them on PSN is still pretty rough. Some videos don't upload properly, and others look like they were recorded on accident. Perhaps the most concerning thing about the feature is that it doesn't make it easy on users to edit videos.
Stream Footage:
Easily the most well implemented share feature thus far. With the simple punch of a couple buttons, you'll be streaming game footage for the rest of the world to see. This is going to be huge for sports gaming. The other night, I found a guy streaming Madden. He was testing out how big of an impact ratings have in the defensive and offensive lines (turns out, ratings play a fairly large role in the trenches) and using the microphone to give commentary. About fifteen people or so were commenting on the chat function to the side. It was a revolutionary moment for me, and I trust that it will play a very big role for communities like OS in the future.
Where do we go from here?
The technology is there, that much is for sure. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of things were rushed to meet the release date of the console. If Sony sticks with it and continues to support the share feature, there is a lot of potential there. I see a world where you and your friends will be playing an online franchise, and the entire group can gather around a single stream and watch as two people go head to head for a super bowl. The next generation of gaming is here, and the share feature seems to be just the start.

You can edit the videos. You just click edit after selecting the video you want. Also you can change the settings of the share button to instantly take a screenshot the moment you tap it.And that works on all screens even the home menu.

Also you can already stream all your gameplay straight to twitch or ustream from the ps4 and your friends can watch from their ps4 and do exactly what you stated to close your article. And it already works amazing

Thanks! I guess I still have to play around with it some more, as it seems like I'm still missing out on some stuff.

Also, about the last part, I'm hoping that the stream feature will be implemented in game. So instead of having to go through PSN and into the variety of streams to choose from, online modes will have specific feeds right there in the game for interested parties.

Xbox One's editing tools work well enough. I was able to edit a couple highlights from a FIFA match, add a voiceover and get it from the Xbox One to youtube in about 10 minutes. See below

I really like this feature but it really confuses me. It seems like it only works for some games such as NBA 2k or FIFA and not for battlefield or madden and when I press the share button its like it doesn't record what I want and records everything else...

Beware that if you have been a sub account on PS3, you will have to make a new account to use any of the Share functionality.
