The Rocky Mountain Meltdown
Posted on July 30, 2011 at 05:58 PM.
Coach Wile had heard what the community was saying. He saw what it was doing in preparation. He still was not ready for the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Invesco Field. It was the biggest crowd he’d had screaming around him since the glory days. Ray Polk was an intimidating prescence on the Colorado team. Jeremiah hoped his offense was ready for this caliber of a defensive squad. The first handful of drives on either side go unsuccessful until Colorado opens up the scoring with a field-goal. Powerful stoppers Thomas Rippy and Curtis Cunningham had been shutting down Chris on every run he’d attempted. Pete Thomas hadn’t gotten into any sort of rhythm. Things weren’t looking good with twenty seconds left in the half down 13-3. But Colorado brings the blitz on the wrong play, and Matt Yemm burns them for a 75-yard pass from Pete to enter the half 13-10. Thomas and Borcky were seemingly working the Colorado defense to start the 3rd quarter, and Jeremiah was feeling confident that the team would pull this one out. That is until the apparently incapable offensive line allows it’s 5th sack on the battered Rams quarterback. Poor Pete was hit so hard the ball went bouncing, gobbled up by the Colorado defensive linemen. Nuku Latu returns the favor, forcing a fumble and recovering it to get the offense back the ball. They manage a field-goal to tie it 13-13 early in the 4th quarter. Colorado gets the ball back and dances up the field to a 20-13 lead, killing off a good chunk of clock in the process. Pete steps up on his next drive, hitting multiple receivers on three consecutive 20+ yard passes to tie it 20-20. Colorado is amazingly stopped on their next possession, giving the Rams the ball 20-all with 3:58 left. Unfortunately, after being sacked for the 7th time, Pete throws a pick on 3rd and 20 to set Colorado up with an easy touchdown. The Rams could not weather the storm, and Colorado wins the Rocky Mountain Showdown in a fantastic bout 27-20.

After the game, Coach Wile agreed to answer a few questions for the Rocky Mountain Collegian.

RMC: “So Coach, the obvious question is, what went wrong?”

Wile: “Our line went wrong. You can’t expect Pete to get into rhythm getting sacked seven times a game. You can’t expect Chris to carry the team when the line is getting outworked and there are miniscule holes.”

RMC: “And what do you plan to do about the issues with the offensive line?”

Coach Wile grins.
Wile: “Well, there’s only one thing we can do right now. Weston, Connor, Joe, and the rest of the line will have a very long week of practice ahead of them. Of that you can be assured.”

RMC: “Many have said that this game was the most important of your schedule this year. How do you feel about losing, and how do you feel this affects your chances in the WAC?”

Wile: “I am obviously very disappointed. I felt we had the edge coming in. I felt we had a lot of great opportunities to pull ahead and win it. It’s sad to see our run end so soon, but this will have no bearing on our chances in the WAC. We’re still undefeated in-conference, and I plan on keeping it that way. I won't let this demotivate my guys. Hopefully after kicking Weston’s *** a bit, we can get back on track.”

RMC: “Thank you for your time, Coach.”
