Denver Broncos At Seattle Seahawks
Ok once again I will start off with the 3 improvements I was expecting this week. The first was obviously a better performance out of Kyle Orton. The second was to see a drop in turnovers. Finally the third was to create some turnovers while on defense.
The first quarter began with a Seattle Seahawks drive ending with a 34 yard touchdown pass from Hasselback to Deon Butler. Very discouraging to see the Seahawks drive down the field with ease. However I was highly impressed with Kyle Orton driving the Broncos down the field on the ensuing drive and capping it off with a 3 yard Touchdown Pass to Brandon Stokley. Great touch pass by Orton. Should be noted during that drive Orton and Royal hooked up for a nice 26 yard completion. I was also very excited to see the Broncos force a 3 and out on the next Seahawks possession. Then on the Broncos next possession Matt Prater kicked a 53 yard field goal with plenty of room to spare. Overall a good first quarter for the Broncos.
The second quarter began with the Broncos once again stopping the Seahawks and forcing a punt. On the Broncos next drive the Seahawks forced a 3 and out and then on the ensuing Seahawks possession the Broncos returned the favor forcing a 3 and out. On the next drive the Broncos drove from their own 13 yard line to the Seahawks 1 yard line in 13 plays. On 2nd and 1 from the 1, Orton found Jabar Gaffney wide open in the back of the endzone, however Gaffney could not hang on to the pass. I will say the pass was slightly high but without a doubt catchable. Then instead of kicking a field goal on 4th and 1, McDaniels decides to go for it, which ended with an ugly left handed pass that was intercepted by the Seahawks Ken Lucas. I will not be mad about this simply because it was a great drive and should have been capped off with a touchdown on 2nd down. And on fourth down I cannot fault Orton for just throwing it up, he had nothing to lose and a sack would have been a waste. The next drive by the Seahawks went for 14 plays covering 80 yards and was capped off by a great 2 yard touch pass from Hasselback to T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Definitely a demoralizing drive before half time. The Seahawks took a 14-10 lead into the half.
The third quarter began with a pass from Orton that was slightly behind Tony Scheffler, upon being hit by Jennings Scheffler fumbled which was recalled by the Seahawks Babineaux setting up a short field. The Broncos were able to shut down the Seahawks with the help of a false start penalty. The Seahawks still managed to get a 22 yard field goal to make the score 17-10. The Seahawks forced a 3 and out on the Broncos ensuing drive and then were able to tip the punt giving the Seahawks the ball at the Broncos 29 yard line. The Seahawks second string QB Seneca Wallace connected on a 1 yard touchdown pass to tight end Joe Newton to give the Seahawks a 24-10 lead. The next time the Broncos touched the ball, it did not last long as safety C.J. Wallace placed his helmet perfectly on the ball to force a fumble by Broncos returner Kenny McKinley that the Seahawks Will Herring recovered. The Seahawks capitalized with a 52 yard field goal by Brandon Coutu to take a 27-10 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was pretty quiet with the only score coming on a 32 yard field goal by Colquitt to cut the Seahawks lead to 27-13. The Broncos may have had the only points in the 4th quarter, but by no means did they out play the Seahawks in the 4th. The field goal drive was prolonged twice by Seahawks defensive penalties. And on every other drive in the 4th the Seahawks methodically shut the Broncos offense down.
As for my 3 improvements I expected to see in the game I will begin with Kyle Orton. Yes he threw one touchdown and one interception, but as I stated above the interception was on 4th down and Orton was better off taking a chance than a sack in that situation. As for not turning the ball over, not good at all. The Broncos lost two fumbles allowing the Seahawks to have a short field. Just unacceptable, cannot turn the ball over in these situations. Then as for creating turnovers once again unacceptable, the Broncos were unable to create any turnovers. However I was impressed with their ability to get to Hasselback. The Broncos sacked Hasselback 3 times including two sacks by Kenny Peterson. Overall I was happy with the first team offense and also delighted with the first team defense. And I am not concerned with the 0-2 record in preseason, and was overall happy with Kyle Ortons progression from the 49ers game to the Seahawks game.
Next game Bears at Broncos 8-30-2009
Hopefully by then the Broncos will have something worked out with Brandon Marshall, until then yall take care.
