That ReDraft #1: 2010 NBA ReDraft
Posted on April 12, 2015 at 05:02 PM.
It's commonly said that draft picks can't truly be assessed after one year, despite analysts persisting in grading the draft picks immediately after their selections. Plenty of undrafted players and late picks have gone on to be forces in the league, even becoming all-stars—an accolade that can't be allotted to that many top-5 picks.

1. Washington Wizards
Actual Pick: John Wall, PG
Re-Draft Pick: John Wall, PG

Wall has been the leader and face of Washington Wizards basketball since the marquee point guard was drafted out of Kentucky with the first overall pick. While the Wizards haven't capitalized to the fullest extent, Wall has been far from the issue and has been a consistent producer for the team.

2. Philadelphia 76ers
Actual Pick: Evan Turner, SG
Re-Draft Pick: Paul George, SF

So, this pick didn't exactly work out for the 76ers. Paul George, despite his broken leg, would have provided the 76ers with a premier player and one that could have turned around the entire franchise. Rather than go through a rebuild stage, the acquisition of George would have (assuming the 76ers realized his potential) put Philadelphia into the playoffs for 8 years. Just look what happened to the Pacers without him.

3. New Jersey Nets
Actual Pick: Derrick Favors, PF
Re-Draft Pick: Derrick Favors, PF

It was a weak draft, and Favors didn't last long with New Jersey, but had he stayed Favors could have been a solid starter/role player for Brooklyn and would have had the chance to learn from Kevin Garnett. While Favors hasn't been a star in Utah, he wouldn't feel that pressure as he would have had more famous players' shadows to hide in. A Williams, Johnson, Pierce, Favors, and Lopez lineup would have been a tough lineup to deal with for any team.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves
Actual Pick: Wesley Johnson, SG
Re-Draft Pick: DeMarcus Cousins, C

While Johnson started his career well and had fewer off-court issues, mouths should be salivating about the prospect of having the best frontcourt in the NBA. A duo of Cousins and Love would be an incredibly formidable frontcourt that could score from the post and the perimeter and would have been a wall in the paint for years to come. And Kevin Love would still be wearing a Timberwolves jersey.

5. Sacramento Kings
Actual Pick: DeMarcus Cousins, C
Re-Draft Pick: Greg Monroe, C

Sac-town misses out on Greg Monroe, but gets arguably the next0best big man on the board in Monroe. The pick is sound on the court—Monroe becomes the alpha male in the frontcourt rather that sharing with Drummond—and more sound than Cousins vis a vis off-court issues. It's not domination, but it's solid and long-lasting.

6. Golden State Warriors
Actual Pick: Epke Udoh, C
Re-Draft Pick: Larry Sanders, PF

The best picks are long gone and Larry Sanders is the best big man still on the table. Clearly the Udoh pick didn't affect the Warriors' long-term future, as they won the Larry O'Brien Trophy a mere 5 years later, but Sanders is the pick over Udoh because he is, simply put, a better and more impactful player.

7. Detroit Pistons
Actual Pick: Greg Monroe, C
Re-Draft Pick: Eric Bledsoe, PG

The second point guard off the board should have been Bledsoe, both for his skills and his stability. The Pistons haven't found a top-tier, reliable point guard, and Bledsoe fits the mould without damaging the team's big-men-first mentality. Bledsoe hasn't truly had the chance to show his full potential, and the Pistons are the perfect team for Bledsoe to do just that.

8. Los Angeles Clippers
Actual Pick: Al-Farouq Aminu, SF
Re-Draft Pick: Gordon Hayward, SF

It's a tough one here, since Aminu was part of the package that netted the Clippers superstar Chris Paul. However, since we've been assuming the pick stays with the team that drafts them, Hayward fits in better in the Clippers future than Aminu. He can score and is comfortable as a secondary option which aligns well with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

9. Utah Jazz
Actual Pick: Gordon Hayward, SF
Re-Draft Pick: Wesley Johnson, SF

Bear with me here. Johnson almost the same caliber shooter as Hayward, the most important factor if the Jazz reprise their PG picks of Exum and Burke. Johnson is also more re-signable than Hayward, something small market teams always have to be mindful of. While Hayward is the better player, he's off the board and the Jazz need scoring—something Johnson can definitely provide.

10. Indiana Pacers
Actual Pick: Paul George, SF
Re-Draft Pick: Avery Bradley, PG

The Pacers won't be able to reprise their Paul George pick, but they do get Bradley at a position of need. Bradley is also one of the better defenders in the NBA, something the Pacers sorely lack in their backcourt. Re-signability is also a factor, with Bradley—as a less-acknowledged player—easier to sign and re-sign than the all-star that is George.
