New Lions Head Coach Thoughts
Posted on February 11, 2014 at 10:29 PM.
Within the last month, Lions ownership has finally got rid of a very incapable head coach in Jim Schwartz. With a record of 29-52, change was clearly needed, as the team continued to flounder year in and year out.

As expected, there was lots of buzz around Detroit as to who would succeed Schwartz and (hopefully) lead the team to the promised land. It was speculated very early on that ownership would be courting Ken Whisenhunt heavily as an attempt to help their digressing (and well paid) quarterback Matthew Stafford. On paper Ken Whisenhunt seemed like a great choice for the Lions. Long story short, Whisenhunt signed a contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Stuck with few realistic options, the Lions chose Jim Caldwell to follow Jim Schwartz as head coach. They went on to say that Jim Caldwell was the first choice all along, which is laughable, and clearly false. Based on his records with prior organizations, it could be argued that he ruins teams rather than winning. With the Indianapolis Colts, he took over a legendary team which was built by Tony Dungy. In a three year span, he brought a 14-2 Colts team to 2-14. He was promptly fired. He was signed late in the 2013 season as offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He rode the offense that took that team to the playoffs and they win the Super Bowl. Fast forward to 2014. Under Caldwell as offensive coordinator, the Ravens finish the season out of the playoffs with a 26th ranked offense. Caldwell has proven that he cannot win with his gameplan.

For Caldwell to have a winning season without riding someone's coat tails, like a Tony Dungy for example, is absurd. Mix this with the team (if you can call it that) that Jim Schwartz left here, and you have a recipe for disaster.

It will be a miracle if the Lions manage to pull out 5 wins in the 2014-15 season.
