UMass Overpowers Arkansas and Complete Flawless Season
Posted on July 14, 2012 at 11:31 AM.
[New Orleans] 14-0!!! It is to be celebrated! UMass entered the season with their first chance to qualify for a bowl game. Not only did they do so, they won it. UMass defeated Arkansas solidly. It was obvious from the start that Arkansas was faster, stronger, and more athletic than the players from UMass, but they didn't allow that to stop them. QB Pagel returned from injury and was cleared to start for UMass after being out for 12 weeks. And he was truly prepared. Pagel amassed 333 yards on 20 completions and 5 touchdowns. Williams saw most of the game in the backfield as the physical play of Arkansas bruised and battered Cox from being able to continue. He had a decent game with 118 yards rushing.

The showing from the Razorbacks players weren't bad, they just appeared to be ineffective. Tyler Wilson had a bad day in the pocket. The pressure kept him on the move and forced him to throw 2 interceptions. He had flashes of greatness on 2 beautiful touchdown passes, both over 40 yards. But as UMass's defense adjusted, he disappeared from the game. Arkansas' HB Davis presented much of a problem in the first half. At times it took 2 or 3 UMass players to take him down. But as the lead grew, his carries shrank. The score would have you believe the game was a blowout, but don't let the numbers fool you. Arkansas just fail to make best of the opportunities they had.

There was nothing but joy for coach Wilson in the post game press conference. "Did I expect the season to go this way? No! I wouldn't have bet $1 that this is how my first season would've been at UMass. All I know is that my players bought into my style of coaching and we made this happen together. Next season may be a whole different story, but today and until preseason workouts begin for next season, I'm going to relish this moment!"
