520racer’s Alternate F1 Universe 1996 season Introduction and entry list

After a 1995 season when Michael Schumacher won his second straight drivers title with Ferrari, things were about to get interesting with the three liter engine formula was modified somewhat so the V10’s were the only engines allowed as per the FIA regulations. This means that the V12’s and the V8’s being used since the 1989 season were no longer permitted, leaving many engine suppliers unsure about their f1 futures. In addition, there were five teams from last season that decided not to continue on to 1996, but two brand new teams were successful in joining the paddock this season. Here’s the entry list for this season

1996 Entry List

Ferrari
Sponsor: Marlboro
1 Michael Schumacher
2 Jacques Villeneuve
In a bold move, Ferrari have won the sweepstakes to sign 1995 CART champion Jacques Villeneuve. He will secure the second Ferrari seat to partner 2-time WDC Michael Schumacher. This will be a big test for the oldest name in F1 in part because the brand-new Ferrari V10 is untested and unproven.

McLaren-Mercedes
Sponsor: Mobil 1
3 Damon Hill
4 Rubens Barrichello
After flirting with the team’s title for the majority of the 1995 season, but ultimately missed out due to a late-season fade. Mercedes Benz and McLaren are hoping that the third time is indeed the charm. They bought back both Damon Hill and Rubens Barrichello, who needs to deliver more points this time.

Ligier-Peugeot
Sponsor: Gauloises
5 Jean Alesi
6 JC Boullion
So much for Alain Prost trying to buy out Ligier, he has decided not to go forward with his grand plan to buy a F1 team for now. In the meantime, the Peugeot powered Ligier still has Jean Alesi but they need much more from JC Boullion for them to have any chance of following up their miracle run in 1995.

Minardi-Honda
Sponsor: Beta Tools
7 Gerhard Berger
8 Jos Verstappen
The Minardi team kept both drivers for 1996. Gerhard Berger wasn’t as bad as some people thought and Jos Verstappen had some dips in performance in 1995 but still delivered some decent amount of points. For them to be good again, both drivers need to show more amazing performances.

Benetton-Renault
Sponsor: Korean Air
9 GC Fisichella
10 Vincenzo Sospiri
A New era is beginning for Flavio Braitore, he started by letting go of pay driver Ukyo Katayama after one season and JJ Lehto retired from F1. So, they ended up going for a youth movement with Rookies GC Fisichella and 1995 F2 champion Vincenzo Sospiri.

Piquet-BMW
Sponsor: Pepsi
11 David Coulthard
12 Ricardo Rosset
David Coulthard stays put at Piquet but they bought along 1995 F2 runner-up, Ricardo Rosset who brings much need funds to a team that needs them to stay near the top of the pecking order. The new BMW V10 is rumored to have the most HP of any of the engines on the grid.

Williams-Mercedes
Sponsor: Rothmans
14 Mika Hakkinen
15 HH Frentzen
After lengthy talks, Williams will finally switch engine suppliers, they will now be using Customer Mercedes Benz V10’s. As for drivers, both drivers from 1995, Mika Hakkinen and HH Frentzen stays put and the hope is that Williams will once again be a championship contender.

Forti-Ferrari
Sponsor: Red Bull
16 Luca Badoer
17 Nicola Larini
Now entering their third season in F1, Forti saw them lost their old engine supplier Lamborghini to the new regulations. The good news is that they kept Luca Badoer on board for 1996 and bought along ex-sauber outcast Nicola Larini who still has knowledge of the Ferrari engines that they will now be using

Larrousse-Cosworth
Sponsor: Canon
18 Eddie Irvine
19 Emmanuel Collard
Eddie Irvine stays at Larrousse but they will now be breaking in a new teammate for him. They have decided to give long time F1 test driver Emmanuel Collard his F1 debut. The hope is that Irvine will continue to develop this team into a solid mid-field contender.

DAMS-Honda
Sponsor: Sanyo
20 Ukyo Katayama
21 Pedro Lamy
After NIssan decided to withdraw from F1 after two seasons, and returning back to Le Mans as a result. DAMS needed a new engine supplier, they are thankful to acquire Customer Honda V10’s. As for their two drivers, Ex-Benetton driver Ukyo Katayama will lead the way and Pedro Lamy is back from injury.

Sauber-Renault
Sponsor: Pioneer
22 Pedro Diniz
23 Norberto Fontana
Guess the Ferrari partnership backfired on Peter Sauber’s team. They are now collecting pieces and ended up with a customer Renault V10 deal. Pedro Diniz stayed put, as he brings much needed money and Norberto Fontana who bypasses F2 to jump straight into F1 will be the other driver.

TWR-BMW
Sponsor: Coca Cola
24 Johnny Herbert
25 Giovanni Lavaggi
The second year of the TWR team is looking to be a one-man show again. Johnny Herbert stays put as he still has the Customer BMW engine at his disposal, as for his new team mate, the now infamous pay driver Giovanni Lavaggi will be asked to pay the steep bills if anything else.

Tyrrell-Yamaha
Sponsor: Nokia
26 Mika Salo
27 Andrea Montermini
Mika Salo remains with the Tyrrell team. Expect some growing pains with the brand-new Yamaha V10 engine and brining in ex-Lola outcast Andrea Montermini isn’t necessary the best answer for them but he brings some decent cash.

Lotus-Rolls Royce
Sponsor: Loctite
28 Martin Brundle
29 Marc Goosens
Martin Brundle has already stated that 1996 is his final F1 season. He stays put at Team Lotus. They also bought along 1995 F2 third place finisher Marc Goosens who should be an immediate upgrade. However, the car is starting to show its age.

Jordan-Peugeot
Sponsor: Benson and Hedges
30 Gianni Morbidelli
31 Tarso Marques
For Eddie Jordan risking on Nigel Mansell, last year’s car was poop to begin with. So Mansell retires for the second time. Morbidelli is being promoted to the number one seat and they bought along a top 5 finisher in F2 in Tarso Marques who also brings funds to help pay for the customer Peugeot engines.

Volvo
Sponsor: HP
32 Jan Magnussen
33 Kenny Brack
After months of speculation, the Footwork team was bought out by Volvo, who is partly owned by Ford. They have convinced Ford to supply them brand new re-badged Ford Zetec engines for this season. Jan Magnussen, who gets another shot at F1 and 4th place finisher in 1995 F2, Kenny Brack are the drivers.

Durango-Hart
Sponsor: Siemens
34 Olivier Panis
35 Allan McNish
The Durango team, is being promoted from the F2 ranks to join F1 for 1996. For the engine they had signed an engine deal with Hart to build their brand new V10 engines. For drivers, they have signed Olivier Panis, who is now on his third team in three years and Allan McNish who is making his F1 debut.

The first part of the season will be posted but only after I finish adjusting all of the stats in the editor programs.
