Key Notes:
~ In the second home game of the season, the fans enjoyed break neck pace throughout the entire first half with both teams shooting over 50% from the field (over 60 for SC State), but VMI made up for the 10+% points difference by hitting 6 threes compared to SC States 2.
~ Facing off against the 2-3 zone for like the 4th time this season VMI was able to find the open man and get them open looks with Chavis Holmes going 3 for 3, Travis Holmes going 2 for 3, and Levar Joseph also knocking one down in the first half to close the gap.
~ Down 6 during the closing seconds of the first half Matt Murrer picked off an arid pass and hit Reggie Williams on an outlet pass for a dunk with 6 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to four, but after a boneheaded play SC State hit a mid range jumper and got the foul with .5 seconds remaining on the clock and converted the and one to push the lead back up to 7, 44-37 at half.
~ A little bit of a slow start for the second half, but VMI came out strong with about 4 minutes left to play once the starters were mass substituded back into the game, the duo of Chavis Holmes and Levar Jospeh led the squad back, after Chavis started things off with a steal which led to a fast break lay in by Joseph things were finally looking up for the Keydets
~ Down 12 with 5 minutes left when the aforementioned steal happened, the Keydets made a strong push and after a couple threes by Joseph the game was right back within reach and with under a minute to play they took a one point lead when Reggie Williams knocked down two free throws after being fouled going to the hoop.
~ A breakdown in the defense let leading scorer Derrick Davis wide open for a three, and with already 20 points at the time, he calmly knocked down the wide open 3 to push SC State back up 2 points with 40 seconds left.
~ A bad turnover by Chavis Holmes, essentially costed the Keydets the game when he tried to squeeze a pass through the lane to Reggie Williams, and after an ill advised three by Joseph SC State pulled a four point lead. After a strong defensive possession the Keydets pushed the ball up the court with six seconds left and Joseph made up for his earlier three and calmly cashed another one to cut the lead back to 1. Forced to foul VMI did exactly that and put Marcus McCants on the line who was 1-1 before attempting his first half of the 1 and 1. But since Levar Joseph who poured in 23 points had to foul to put them on the line, he was fouled out of the game which wasn't promising for the Keydets.
~ But, McCants missed the first half of the 1 and 1 and VMI had a chance to win the game only down 1 point with 5 seconds left. Needing a good look with Joseph on the bench, Sophomore Chavis Holmes recieved the inbounds pass and was trapped at half court, with no where to go he found Fred Robinson who was subbed in for Joseph, not exactly the person you want with the ball, and with time running down he pulled up from three and watched it go in and out for a heart breaking loss for the Keydets.

Key Notes:
~ A horrible open to the game for the Keydets today, down 34-16 VMI couldnt make a shot with cheat codes applied, shooting 27% from the field and going 0-8 from three.
~ Lowly 1-5 Mercer on the other hand shot 63% in the first half, gotten to the line 9 times compared to VMIs 2, and also have capitilized off of all 4 VMI turnovers (all 4 that seemed to come back to back to back to back).
~ The second half was more of the same for VMI, despite cutting the lead a little bit we never could get into the grove and bring the lead back.
~ Levar Joseph poured in 17 points after struggling early on, although he shot a mere 6 for 18 from the field, he was the only one who was able to put the points on the board. Travis Holmes got some fast break buckets and Reggie Williams got close to another double double with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
~ Mercer on the other hand, didnt really have a stand out player and it was more of a team effort which hurt VMI even more, with Florence and Waters both dropping in 12 points on over 60% shooting, all 13 players who played notched points in the scoring column.
~ A very disapointing showing for the VMI Keydets on their lack luster home opener, with an arena that was barely half full, they didn't give the campus much of a reason to be excited.

Key Notes:
~ It was a very slow start for VMI today, starting out with Cornell taking a 10-0 run, it looked gloomy early in the William & Mary Tournament for the beloved Keydets. The Cornell big man were just over powering our small lineup and doing what they wanted to against us.
~ After early substitions our bench held Cornell off keeping the defecit from enhancing, and after a strong pep talk by Coach Reeseman to the starters, they went out there with a fire lit under them, a steal and a transition dunk by Chavis Holmes started the run, and then back to back threes by Levar Joseph, we began to figure out their 3-2 zone defense and Joseph was finding the holes leading to a quick 8 points for him after starting out 0-3 not being able to hit anything
~ They Keydets closed out the half strong only down 23-20, after giving a quick 10 points to open the game, closing on a 20-13 run isn't half bad.
~ The second half started much like the first, as Cornell built their lead right back up going on a 12-2 run as their 3-2 zone defense was just to much for VMI. Shooting a mere 35% from the field it wasn't that they were unable to get open looks it was more that we were just unable to knock them down. Definitely a very frustrating game, one we could have easily won. We did make a run late in the second half, but as it always it, too little too late, cutting the lead to 7 with 40 seconds left was to much to overcome.

Key Notes:
~ After our Keydets exploded with points this was a much lower scoring defensive battle. Where we were hitting our threes last game against Howard, they just weren't falling today against Army.
~ Reggie Williams struggled pretty much all game, but our center Matt Murrerr kept us in the game early scoring all his points to keep up with the Black Knights, until the second half when Chavis Holmes and Levar Joseph our 1-2 punch in the back court went off and kept us in the game.
~ Without Josephs back to back three pointers late in the game we would have never went into overtime, and after he hit his second three with 20 seconds left, we had to play lock down defense to keep Army from ending it there. Williams came through with great defense and was all over Brown who was 10-11 before that shot and was by far the Knights best player.
~ In overtime it was all the Keydets though, taking leads of 6 and 8 points late, keeping Army at bay and getting their second win of the year. Brown finally was shut down in the 5 minute overtime period and the Knights were nothing without his offense.

Key Notes:
~ The Name of the game today was defense, we destroyed them on the turnover front and despite the numbers being in our favor, by only 5 turnovers (14-9) it seemed like much more during the game, and each turnover led to a fast break bucket. (I like to push the tempo with any team.)
~ Levar Joseph was enfuego, this man was hitting absolutely everything early on and kept our early small lead keeping Howard at bay.
~ Great all around games from Chavis Holmes and Reggie Williams, both who will be around next year for our squad put in great all around performances. Holmes was key in many of the turnovers notching 4 steals and a few other deflections to go along with his 5 assist and 3 rebounds, oh and not to mention he poured in 19 points too. Williams notched the VMIs first double-double of the season 16 points and 11 rebounds, both were key in breaking the game open to start the second half with a 18-2 run.
~ After the initial run, when we had some subs in Howard tried to make a bit of a comeback and cut the lead to single digits, after the reserves held them off bay a little bit, the starters came back in and the trio of Joseph, Holmes, and Williams lit the spark of another run and propelled us to a 24 point victory.

As you can see we are going with a very small lineup, this is the most talented 10 man rotation I could put together with this clan of misfits, lol.. So here it goes, our go to scorers will hopefully be Levar Joseph who is a gunner from 3, and Reggie Williams who usually knocks down the mid range jumper. It will be a tough go with this lineup, but hopefully with recruiting and a lower level conference schedule we'll be able to compete a little bit.
