Thoughts on gambling while video gaming

I get that tons of folks out there enjoy gambling, and that’s perfectly fine. Everyone has their thing, so who am I to judge? But recently, I’ve been noticing more and more ways to gamble for real money while playing some of my favorite video games. I’m specifically referring to Fallout Las Vegas, Red Dead Redemption 2, and others.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who picked up on this: https://gamerssuffice.com/games-that...-and-gambling/. I’m struggling to understand the need to mix these two categories together. Is the gambling industry suffering so bad that it needs access to new players? If so, must they be searched for among video gamers, because, what, playing online already makes someone susceptible to addiction?

This sort of thing pisses me off. I’m not trying to sound like a purist, nor do I have a stick up my a**, but it does annoy me to see gambling oozing its way into more and more activities online. It’s like an infection that won’t go away! I can’t be the only one who feels this way?!

I 100% agree with you. I hate everything that's going on around gambling. Before I felt there was a shield from it in every aspect. But now... The flood gates have open. I just don't like it. I can't imagine if your trying to get over gambling addiction in this world. It's literally every where.

It's another reason I can't get into My Player or My Career in 2K. It's all the VC or in game currency. It's the grinding that feeds this kind of addiction pattern. There is no running from it in game. It pops up every single time.

But your not the only one.

Gacha games are money sinks. My issue with it is the gacha stuff is seeping into full 60$ AAA games. I play Gundam Battle Operation 2 a bunch. It has gacha mechanics, loot boxes, tokens you earn, etc. Compared to others, it's relatively fair and at least a game to play.

There are also stories like this one(link goes to a Destructoid article on the topic).

A guy spent 70k on a mobile game with heavy gambling aspects. If you have the disposable income, sure, go ahead. But it can be a big trigger, especially for younger kids.

I have a son now. I think about **** like this. 70k.... My Lord, if my son used any money towards a game besides buying it or towards in game currency. This might turn into a no videos games household.

But that's why I bring up the other point of "grinding". It's one thing trying to beat a level in Mario. But it's a totally different thing when you're trying to build a characters jumper. I don't know go to the park [emoji23]. I sound old [emoji23].

I get ya on sounding old . Man if I ordered a movie off of PPV back in the day I couldn't sit down for the rest of it, hell if I was spending hundreds of dollars on games.

imho I have no problem with grinding in games, even F2P games. As long as I can get it with time put in, I don't mind. I like how Warframe did it when I played. The premium currency was easy to trade for without spending money and all it really did was shorten the time something took to build. So if you ended up grinding a mission type, you could be swimming in fun bucks with nothing but time invested.

Re: Thoughts on gambling while video gaming

My friends and I used to gamble on just about every game of Madden or NCAA football we played. It was never crazy amounts, maybe 5 or 10 bucks a game. We did have this one friend that was not very good, but was absolutely addicted to gambling, and we took a lot of money from him. At one point he owed me like $2500, but I never figured he would pay me back, so it just became a running joke about he would never be able to pay me off. We settled on $200 and he payed for my dinner.
