As an offline player only, is NBA 2K18 a fairly substantial upgrade over 2K17 in terms of gameplay, MyGM, and MyLeague mode?

A lot would depend on the roster you are going to use. If you are using the 2k default rosters then not really a huge upgrade. After saying that $19.99 is a good deal.

I'd say so. There are a lot of new MyLeague and MyGM features (like the Story Mode I still haven't tried), plus the 30 awesome All Time teams and something like 16 new classic teams.

This link mentions everything new, if those interest you. Plus, I think the gameplay itself is a huge step up from last years'. Love little things like the new interactions for loose balls.

I think you would be better off saving these 20 bucks for the 2k19 which comes out in 2 and a half months

for 19.99 or even 29.99, it's a can't miss. It's very fun, I think.

Haven't run into any big glitches yet, either. Like I said in another thread, new sliders are always good. Pass speed is a huge slider as is min-max speed.

I am an offline player only. I no longer have NBA 2k17 installed.

All I will say is that 2k18 comes with its own share of problems. The latest patch somewhat helps but the following lingering issues are still present. All of the following are still present today and is what killed the game for me. I still play the game once in a while, but it's not enjoyable because of all the following.

Transition defense is a complete jumbo'd mess. The defenders getting back on defense goes absolutely haywire. Defenders are programmed to run to a spot first and foremost without even keeping eye on their man; they have absolutely no initial awareness of who they're suppose to be guarding as they run back on transition defense. Then they try to readjust their position once the offense crosses the half court line. Jumo'd mess.

Transition defense vs. Long passes. Transition offense will ALWAYS have an advantage versus transition defense in 2k because of the way 2k has the transition defense programmed. On top of the jumbo'd defensive mess, the lack of defensive awareness on transition, plus the offensive players always knowing where they're suppose to go, the offense frequently takes full advantage during transition. This allows full court passes to work frequently. The latest patches help to only alleviate the success rate of those long passes, but do not help defense awareness whatosever; the transition defense is still a jumbo’d mess. It's simply a band aid approach that will probably still rear its head for 2k19.

Otto Porter effect. Defenders leaving someone completely open at the corner 3. Apparently this doesn't happen on the PS3 version (I think). This is solely the problem with PS4/XB1 version. This happens because the same defender sits directly in the middle of the paint. Yes, I have seen Curry, Durant, Klay left completely wide open at the 3. This was purposely programmed because the idea behind this was that this would ONLY be used for terrible 3 point shooters like Otto Porter, Ben Simmons. Even so, the defender should not be standing directly underneath the basket in the paint. This is a gameplay "feature" that basically killed the game for me. I don't have an issue with leaving poor shooters open, but when the defender stands right below the rim, and is not even within reach to defend the open three, I have an issue with that. Yes, and you will get burnt in the game on multiple occasions because THIS will happen will good three point shooters.

"Cheat code"/cheat sequence. Same video as the second (transition defense). Notice the first several sequences. This is a cheat code of sort. If you are able to get a running start on the wing, you can drive the basket to score with ease (high success rate). The patch helped somewhat but this is still a major issue in the game. If you need a bucket, that's what you can do.

Switching is an issue. You can't stop your teammate defenders from unnecessary switching.
I don't have a video on this but I can probably get one up if needed. The game is programmed to switch your defenders frequently. It's difficult to stay on your man (play man to man defense) because 2k18 decided to practically switch everything. Even if you fight around the screen, your teammate still wants to switch, leaving one of the offensive players open. I wish there was a "no switch" button that I can press that tells my teammate not to switch.

A great post, as many problems as the 2k18 has, I agree that the defense overall is the biggest and the most impactful one. I just think defense needs to be reworked, I don't know why but the last 2 versions of the game have had big problems with defense. IN 2k17 it was a pick and roll defense, I don't really remember how good the transition defense was and 2k18 it just a mess on that side of the court.



2k18 is promising, but it just feels like it needs much more work, many things need to be polished, feels unfinished etc.


I recently reinstalled 2k14 on my PS4 and it really feels good, 2k18 has a lot more options because it simply is a newer game, but man 2k14 gameplay feels better to me, just my opinion tho.


I wish 2k really worked on polishing things from 2k18 and making 2k19 a solid game but that unfortunately doesn't sell games, we will see some new stuff to create the hype but what is 2k19 going to look like, I am really curious to see.
